I was shocked this week to find out the following ridiculous scenario i am faced due to lack of foresight by Welsh Assembly on Prescription charges and red tape etc:
I currently live in Wales (Cardiff). I have a GP in Wales(Cardiff). I have an out of area refferal to Bristol ADHD Clinic funded by Wales (Cardiff). I use a pharmacy in Wales (Cardiff) to collect prescriptions. Do i get FREE NHS prescriptions. NO...
Apprently, due to the fact i have a bristol DR/Address on the prescription paper i get for the ADHD medication. It does not matter that i am from wales, in wales, with gp in wales and refferal paid for by wales etc - i must pay full charge for prescription. Madness. Hipocrisy and unfair.
Apprently if your on the boarder of Wales (living in Wales) but have GP in England and.or have pharmacy in England - you get an exemption card to get the free prescription your entitled too. I cannot have this as my situation is DIFFERENT.
I now have to wait for law change sometime in 2009?!?! when i will then ONLY be able to put in a claim for a refund. So i must still pay out and then go through hoops to get a refund (take ages bo doubt) everytime i get my ADHD medications.
My GP wont do shared care or re write prescription on his pad so i can have it FREE as it should be. So i have no options here.
BE WARNED WALES. MORE RED TAPE, HOOPS, HASSLES and CHALLENGES - even after the hard work of getting a refferal and treatment.

This is such a crappy situation!
You're going to be out of pocket, because the idiots in charge of the NHS are more enthusiastic about creating bureaucracy than giving healthcare!
Everyone has a right to be proud of the nation or region they're from, but i think if you have a British passport you should be able to access the same experts and medications whether you're in Aberdeen or Aberystwyth!
There must be thousands of people & families living in the border regions of the UK who are affected by this!
Have you thought about where to take it from here?... Will you send letters to your MP/welsh assembly member?

I need exemption card like those on boarder. Those on boarder get one as their scenario is different. They are living in wales with english GP so get a card so no fees paid.
I am living in wales with welsh gp but have out patient care in england with engish prescription so is a different issue and no exemption card allowed.
MP in Wales Edwina Hart (HEalth) is aware and stated law changing in Autumn (no date!) but until then i will have to pay and no chance of getting money back. After law change, i will have to apply every time for each prescription charge and get a cheque refund (which no doubt will take ages and need me to send it in with reciepts).
Unless GP does the presciption on welsh paper or shared care is sorted, i will always have this issue. I dont see why i cant have exemption card for this scenario and be done with it. Instead, its more red tape, hassle, cost and waiting when its does not have to be like this.
I have no plans to do much more as busy but others will in Wales will have this if they get reffered out of area for ADHD and get meds written up by english climic for adhd (Bristol etc).

you clearly deserve an exemption card!
maybe you could try and speak on the phone to the psychiatrist you saw at the Bristol ADHD clinic, they must regularly see people from wales, so perhaps they've found a way to overcome this problem in the past.

I did and she thought that the fact my address (welsh) was on the prescription and all other factors taken into account - that this allowed me to treat it as normal free welsh prescription. Sadly this is not so. The only way round is to get prescriptions of adhd drugs she wants me to use, from my local GP (Who has declined to do this).
So i am at dead end and just have to pay and then later on pay and claim back regularly. Tedious!

that really sucks!
all i can think of, is maybe you could try and find a more supportive GP. -seeing as you're going to be taking medication for the foreseeable future, it might be better for you in the long run anyway.
