I am posting this because I reckon a few people on here will have an answer.
Simply (if I can ever do simply...) all I need to know is.
Q) Is it anywhere near viable at the moment to use Electricity as a source of total room/house heating/water heating versus natural gas?
I reckon it is not, even considering a 90% efficient vs older 80+% efficient gas boiler/water heating method.
Presuming that gas is better......
Q) Does anyone have any ideas how much more efficient gas is as a heating source?

OMG Andy your technical mind never rests, i will just pass you onto my OH, you would have a friend for life...
Well i can't tell you off the top of my head luvvie, its generally known gas is cheaper, i'm sure there are comparisons on-line. I've had gch in my last 2 homes & it was cheaper than our previous electric storage heating.
I would personally rather have a not-so eco friendly aga & a huge fuel bill!!!
I drive my OH nuts!

Depends on the circs - a small, well insulated, house/flat will be cheaper on electric and vice versa at the moment.

I would rather have wood burn stove and save a load they are in machine mart for £80 quid connect to your old chimney and away you go free heat with a bit of wood and can get them to heat water and cook on.

LOL, SNS, you are funny and you might be right except I need quite a lot of maintenance. I think the capacitors and the board need replacing, new hard drive, memory replaced as some does not work, bit of thermal compound on the heatsink, new fans etc. (I am not the only one either.......)
Argh I was only looking at the power of EVA clip 2 days ago!!!!!!!!
I don't think I will ask about the energy efficiency there.

Hmm. I think I need to tackle this differently. I am trying to phrase it so its easy to get my target answer, but....it may take me a few revisions lol.
Q) If it costs me 10p for enough gas to produce 1KW/hour of natural gas heating, then what is the cost of electricity to produce 1KW/hour of electric heat.?
I did look on the internet but I think writing this again has made me think of a different way to interrogate the search engines..
I know that just from heating a 10x10 room with a 1KW (consumption) halogen heater it will cost more than likely, in the coldest winter times, cold winds not permitting, £1/day to maintain a 20degree temp (due to the fact that the room is north facing and the house does not have cavity wall insulation. If I scale this £1/day to the rest of the house, it would easily be £5-6 per day, at a guess. Whereas the old gas was last year about £4 I think, maybe 3.60. so it still beats the potential.
I really should go and ask on some science forums. I was just being typically lazy I suppose.

mercury thermometer - ye canna buy for love nor money in the major chemists - seems as a nation of mental invalids we have ceased to be able to use them so instead use resource wasting batteries... Tried to buy nice simple min max thermometer at garden centre y'day - same problem
SafenSound where are you my wood burning stove would love you! I've got a tertiary burn stove, very very efficient. A load of logs costs about £75 and lasts about two months. I just hope they're planting new trees for every one that gets felled.
Szu bug new bug

I read all about tertiary air burning stoves. How interesting and smart. Your stove seems quite expensive as it only heats one room for £37.50 per month (£9.375 per week)!!!!!eek. Still, its your choice and it's probably quite hypnotic and I bet everyone just sits looking at the fire whilst you say "all donations gratefully received to support my hypnotic fire" Oh, and the room might be quite big which would make the calculation more favourable.
