yes i am a forty four year old and am just starting down the road of first appointment with gp on Friday i fit nearly all of the symptoms lists from us and nhs i have a family of 5 2 of them are in there 20s i have a good job and am really really frightened of going into the mental health system in ni as i have seen some of the stigmas and attitudes even of staff when my wife had a breakdown several years ago she is fine now and back at work but it was scary. so when i read some of the nightmare attitudes on the threads especially in London i am really frightened.

At the beginning of this year, AADD-UK did a bit of checking into the situation in Northern Ireland, and discovered that things are bad in NI for adults needing an assessment for ADHD so we added some tips about what to do, and who to contact, in the NI section of the specialist list on our website here www.aadd.org.uk/specialistssupport/specialists.htmlI am sorry that this is not better news AADD-UK has written to the Belfast contacts, but we've not had a reply

Hi and thanks for your response. I had been checking for ages and then given up!
How did you get on with your GP ? I went to mine back in November and he told me the condition did not exist. I cant face going back yet, I hope you got on better.

Hi, Where did you go for your assessment? I have been to my doctor, who was not really much help. Anyway, she put me on yet more anti d's and also the clinical Psychology waiting list. I have since seen a Psychotherapist who was very quick to discharge me after hearing that I wanted an assessment for ADHD, however he was quick to put me in touch with a support group. I get the impression that they think your either chasing amphetamines or that ADHD does not exist. Very frustrating. The doc has told me she will, if I get the name of someone in England, refer me. Have you made any more progress through the system?

Hi there, just stumbled across this thread. I'm 40 yrs old and I live in Derry/Londonderry and went to see my GP as I suspected I suffered from ADHD (and have done for most of my life). He claimed to know very little about it but referred me to the local primary care trust.
A few months later I was seen by a social worker who suspected I had Aspergers Syndrome and she then referred me on to a consultant psychiatrist. I saw him a few months later and he confirmed the diagnosis and referred me on to the local ASD service.
I've been seeing somebody there now for a few months and she's confirmed that my primary diagnosis as ADHD with secondary Aspergers, she's going to try and get my doctor to sort out a prescription for some kind of meds but if my doctor or a local psychiatrist refuse I'll have to go private.
I think it's disgusting that GP's are refusing to acknowledge the condition, the NHS themselves recognise it so if you're stuck in that position don't let it rest, write to the health minister and complain in the strongest terms. (It might seem a drastic step but after waiting a year to get an appointment with the ASD service, a couple of sharp emails to Michael McGimpsey, who was minister for health at the time sped things up immensely).

Just turned 35 myself. I knew that I have ADHD for over 10 years. My mother is a health visitor nurse and she got me to read up on ADHD after she went to a conference - the ADHD expert was talking about ADHD and all that - that picked up her attention so she got me to look stuff up. I went to see a doctor 15 years ago in London, asking for referral. She refused to refer me to the ADHD experts (she knew nothing at all about ADHD) so she just assumed it was because of my deafness.
Now that I am back at college - it is getting quite difficult so I went to my GP in Belfast to ask her to refer me to Maudsley in London - thats where the National Adult ADHD Services is based. She was not very sure about that saying that they don't have the power to refer me to a "tertiary service" but she will refer me to Woodstock Link (Woodstock Lodge - that's the Mental Resource Centre for Belfast HSCT) so we will see how it will go from there. Seeing that there is no proper Adult ADHD service in the North, I do hope they will go and refer me to Maudsley.
It is very sad to see that there is no active adult support group in NI :-(

I'm at the same stage myself, GP told me last week that over 16s go to a psychiatrist for ADD screening I have dyslexia it's actually a triad condition if your dyslexic you probably have AS and ADD as well I had to go private to get an assessment for my dyslexia I have also have GAD its common to have anxiety with the these conditions from what I can gather & understand. My psychiatrist isn't taken my condition seriously as he's only treating my anxiety well that's how it feels I have tackled him & asked him about my concentration he says my attention & concentration lack off is cause of my anxiety. I just feel that he's not looking at the whole picture, so I'm going private again to a psychologists in Belfast in the new year, she is going to send a report to my GP & psychiatrist with her findings. just like all some of you I'm in my 30s I have suffered too long with the conditions it's time I got to the bottom of things catch up with you later!!!

Hello people. I first went to see my GP about 5-6 years ago with anxiety, depression and intrusive thoughts. I was put on three different types of anti-d's which didn't help at all. After five years of back and forth from the GP and private therapists, I found out myself that I had ADHD, I eventually got referred to the mental health team who then referred me to the psychiatrist who after meeting me twice and my mother once (who had all my school reports) agrees that I do have "attention problems". He is supposed to be away to talk with a GP and pharmacist to see if they will prescribe me the medication, but he doesn't seem so sure as you probably know the medication is not licensed for adults in NI . i go again on the 27th of this month, so fingers crossed, this has gone on too long. Im sure I have a co-morbidity also , but none of the people I have seen seem to know a lot about ADHD never mind co-morbid conditions and rely heavily on the self report scales and history. I am going to contact these people for some help too. www.addni.net/pages/55/adult-services

Has there been any improvements in NI's view on adhd? I don't want a doctor to just dismiss me without even a thought

Has there been any improvements in NI's view on adhd? I don't want a doctor to just dismiss me without even a thought No, you got to be joking. We are all in a situation where there's gonna be more cuts to save money. Which part always suffers most? M/health off course. I was diagnosed this year by an ordinary psychiatrist. Adhd centre in northern Ireland will be light years away. Wanna chat to me how I managed give me pm. Happy to help. Manson88
