There's an article in today's Observer which says " the DoH is setting up a system whereby police, courts and prisons will test all adult offenders for Adhd"
This quotes research carried out by Prof Asherson which suggest the probability of 20% of prisoners as having undx Adhd. Another paper suggested 10% of those presenting with drug and alcohol addiction are also likely to have undx Adhd.
This must surely increase the chances of setting up an Adult Adhd clinic in every part of the country and hopefully the E petition will add weight to this!

This is great news. The politicians are finally waking up to the fact it's actually in their interests to tackle ADHD as that can cut crime and reduce the burden on the NHS of people with drug and alcohol problems.
Let's hope the next government carries this on.

Its very reassuring to have people like Pro. A campaigning for people who are likely to be discriminated against and forgotton, this could be a breakthrough in slowly reducing the re-offending rate?? Brilliant news..I'm in great sympathy with people trapped in the drugs/crime/prison cycle.

Although it's good news, no doubt the way the media will start reporting more on it, it will make all of us here veiwed as criminals. I dont know about some of you, but most people only have to take one look at me for them to instantly dislike me, brand me a trouble maker and so on. I even had people in professional positions while I was at college via the Job Centre once, tell me it would be so funny if I ended up in prison. It's not nice to have to face shit like that everyday, and yet some of us still struggle on, doing just that. This 'could' make some people with bad views of people with ADHD even worse, and no doubt they'll be going around spouting 'I told you so' and it will give them even more reason to hate people like us! Bastards

Does this mean that the best way to get assessed quickly, instead of waiting 6 months/years is to start smashing up stuff constantly?

This is excellent news and long awaited. If only these individuals had been assessed and treated as children we may not need to test all prisoners for ADHD. Hopefully now, health services will have to assess and treat ADHD throughout the lifespan rather than wait until its too late and done behind bars.
Being married to a prison officer who has been in service some 32yrs, I know only too well how frustrated he gets knowing that he has a prisoner with ADHD in urgent need of help and support but nothing ever forthcoming. The amounts of suicides over the years he has witnessed, the inmates he has cut down from the bars on windows only to be told they suffered severe depression by some prison quack who is too old to practice or not allowed to do general practice in the community.
For over 15yrs I have campaigned for better services for ADHD in prison and community hoping one day I can retire knowing that services will be delivered without campaigning, however I have no faith in the DoH or our government as they dont often practice what they preach!!!
Sorry folk I get so passionate over this issue as far too many young lives been ruined because services failed them in the community.
Here is hoping this gets the publicity it deserves but in a positive way.
Happy New Year everyone. Honey xxx
I only hope this is not another ploy by the Labour government pre-election vote hunting and that they can get this endorsed before general elections.
