They help with concentration and focus that's it. It doesn't sound a lot, but believe me it makes a big difference.

I've found that I feel more relaxed - jittery leg stops, not constantly needing to get up and pace around - which in turn helps me to concentrate, be that on work or watching a dvd or whatever.
Although my attention still gets pulled away from tasks at times I find it much easier to get back on task when I've had my meds, like I'm in control rather than a passenger. Doesn't help with what I choose to give my attention to though, so procrastination can still be an issue!
I sleep much better afterwards too, and that in itself helps with focus and concentration.

I agree with irregularmark ! The main thing for me is the clarity of thought ,as if the fog at last has lifted and I can see the world clearly for the 1st time ! Also I can work out people I need to avoid and not get so involved with others drama which in turn means that I can focus on my own stuff first so prioritising skills are getting better ! Stopping and relaxing and not feeling guilty about it is another bonus and not beating myself up if things dont get done !

thankyou everyone, ive decided i do want to try them, ive got nothing to lose and hopefully lots to gain has anyone experienced any negitives, horrible side effects? i know everyone responds to them differently and from what ive read, the main ones seem to be weight loss and feeling a bit horrible when they start to wear off.

I've been on ritalin before and it reeally messed me up. It would work nicely for awhile; I'd have improved concentration etc, but after it wore off I'd go absolutely crazy! I wasn't even sure what was real and what wasn't by the end of it. Pretty messed up!
I'm on dexedrine now and it's waaay better. I get the benefits of improved focus and don't go crazy when it wears off. I sometimes get a bit moody for about an hour when it's wearing off but this is far better than losing my mind. : )
Don't let me put you off ritalin though. As you already pointed out; it can affect different people differently.

I can concentrate, I can finish what I start, I can sit still I don't get lost, the haze has lifted, I wouldn't be without mine. I do have slight side effects but its worth it, loss of appetite, not as bad as when I first started, and dry mouth. Not every version of each med works the same for different people so be prepared to try different ones.

thanks for the input everyone, i got my meds today concerta xl 18 something, but cant start them till next thursday, becauase i need blood pressure checks day b4 and the day i start and its the earliest appointments i can get! only a week to go i finally managed to get them the 1st chemist i went to wouldnt do it as they said the strength wasnt wrote in the wrong place, even tho it was on there!?! so i had to ring the hospital dr and go to another armed with her phone number. i was so angry at the picky pharmacist, i just snatched the persrciption and stormed out ohh and i got these really good time out cards from the hospital today, that say sorry but i need to take a time out and calm down for 5 mins. ill be back soon. designed for kids but she said she thought they might come in useful and they did instead of aurguing over something silly with my bf i gave him a card and came back and no arguement! amazing
