Hi. I've been trying to get help for months now, almost coming onto a year I think now!
My story so far (well, where I am now) is that I was referred to a neurologist by my GP who then referred me to the Maudsley, but they didn't accept the referral because they said they needed someone who would be able to prescribe me medication if it came to it. I went to my GP again and he put me onto a psychiatrist who I had an appointment with just over a week ago.
I'm really annoyed with myself though because I didn't really prepare for the appointment because I thought that the fact that I'd already been referred to the Maudsley by the neurologist would mean that the psychiatrist would just pass me on without too many questions. No chance!
It was an hour and a half long and she said she'd just use the time for a general assessment and then decide whether or not she'd need to refer me.
At the end of the hour and half she said she wasn't going to refer me, her reasons were that I'd spent a bit of my childhood in America (age 2 - 7) and that because they're so quick to diagnose ADHD in America I would have been diagnosed, and that it would have been incredibly obvious that I'd had ADHD when I was a child because I would have been climbing over seats and wouldn't have been able to sit down. The thing is, I was a pretty unruly child, I've looked at my old school reports and they all say stuff about how I need to learn to pay more attention, and anyway it's the inattentive type which I think I have where there isn't as much hyperactivity.
She said I've just been depressed for a long time and increased the dosage of my anti-depressants and booked me in for a blood test.
It's so frustrating! I had the letter today about my next appointment, it's not until the 29th April. I've already started preparing. I've printed off this NHS thing: www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder/Pages/Symptoms.aspx
And this BBC article: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6225615.stm
Which I'm going to show to her.
Any advice on what I should say to her when it comes round the appointment again? And I've been thinking that I should speak to my GP and see if I can get him to give me a referral straight to the Maudsley. Any point in doing this?
