Hi
I'm trying to find out where in the country, those dx with Adhd have been offered CBT, either on an individual basis or in a group situation. Also whether this was offered in addition to medication, or instead of medication.
I believe the Adult Adhd Clinic run by Dr Adamou, at the South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust does provide some form of psychological support, but am not sure where else in the country this happens.
Hope you can help.

Hi, i was diagnosed at the nottingham adult adhd clinic in march. i was offered medication, and some sessions with a psychologist and group sessions with other adhd adults. however i only got one session with the psychologist because she then left and it was at the same time as my appointment with my consultant so i only got to speak to her for approx 20mins. ive not heard anything about the group sessions or when they will be getting a new psychologist, i would also like to try CBT so i will ask at my next appointment with my consultant in sept, however i think this is going to be my last appointment with my consultant before they pass me back to the mental health team that i saw before and were convinced i had a personality disorder or bi polar. so nottingham seem to offer more than just meds but there is a lack of follow through on their promises. i hope this helps

Hi Laura and Twix
Thanks very much for your replies - much appreciated.
Have been asked by our local psychiatrist who is running our pilot clinic if I know of any clinics where CBT or other psychological support is being offered. Guess he wants to see if he can make a case for additional staffing in his clinic.
Laura - did you go throught the QMC and Twix - where were yo dx?
Again many thanks

I was referred by my GP to the South London & Maudley Hospital where I was diagnosed, placed on medication and offered CBT. I finished my 17th and final CBT session yesterday and it was life changing.
Things are not perfect but they are a hell of a lot better!
Hope this ifo helps.

Hi truelee
Thanks very much for posting - all information gratefully received!
Out of interest was the CBT offerred on an individual basis, or were you in a group? If it was a group, how many were in the group?
Sorry another question?! Do you know what kind of therapist (Psychologist, Occupational therapist, Nurse therapist etc) did the individual/ group therapy?
It does sound as though you've been able to access a good comprehensive service and I'm really glad life has greatly improved for you.
Many thanks

Hi Annie, I am still waiting for my appointment to the QMC, but I have been having 1-on-1 Psychotherapy sessions for a while. I pay privately (work paid initially, I pay now as left work). I tried a psychologist but that just didn't work for me. It has been really helpful, working out why I do things, how I can think outside my black and white thinking ! Basically it has helped me to realise that I am 'normal' just have different thought patterns. I refused to go at first, how can my childhood help me now......well turning point to say the least ! I couldn't go to a group session as I don't like opening up in front of others/strangers, so if at all possible the sessions should be arranged on an individual basis. Hope this helps.

Thanks laura.
What a pity the clinic couldn't follow through because of staffing problems - all too familiar! However at least it was recognised there would be more benefit for individuals if they were provided with additional support over and above meds.
Let's hope they've been able to recruit a clinical psychologist and you get the opportunity to have CBT.

After being diagnosed at the maudsley and settling into medication I was offered group or one to one sessions of CBT . After taking them up on the offer, I was given 16 one to one sessions with a clinical psychologist.
This was also a life-changing for me. The whole course took a year, and i was able to make the most of the sessions by dealing with problems that had cropped up real time and seeing them through with the therapist.
I hope you get the chance to give a go annie
best of luck

I had about 6 sessions of CBT in total, 1 to 1. Problem is I'm not medicated, and I didn't really engage into the process as much as I could. Didn't really get any benefit from it

Hi yes i had group work at Maudsley hospital they give you 3 dates every friday whenever that is, you have to see your advisor who you see every 3-5 months and they put you on the course, its been very helpful, you get given handouts of all 3 classes and so now i can put the techniques i have from the handouts into pratise and so far so good, and now on the waiting list for CBT so looking forward to this. So try and get a group workshop and ask your advisor on this, good luck with this, take care

the support at the maudsley sounds really helpful i wish theres was anything even close to that in nottingham! i saw my consultant today and asked about other support apart from meds and her reply was very dissapointing to say the least. it is unlikely they will be getting a psychologist anytime soon, so because of staff levels are unable to cbt or counselling and dont know if they ever will. the support group that she was hoping to set up this autumn is also now on hold because there isnt a staff member to help us (i dont know if a group of adhd people would be able to set it up on our own, i know i couldnt ) she said it will also take between 1 and 2 years to set up shared care agreements however she said they have started the process. the best she could do was write a letter to my gp to ask me to be put on a waiting list for counselling and cbt through the local mental health service. although the meds help, without any psychological support i feel unable to progress very far from when i was diagnosed. is the situation the same nationwide apart from the maudsley? does anybody know,

Sorry to go off on a bit of a tangent, but is it possible to to receive CBT at a facility other than the one you were diagnosed at? I was dx at Mausdley, but live too far away to make frequent visits back.
Its good to hear that peeps are having good results with it.

I believe I have ADHD after a long search .......... I knew there was something but never could put a finger on it. I undertook CBT about three years ago but it never actually came out with the diagnosis I am still after. I tprovided explanations of certain aggresive traits I possessed and has actually helped me control my anger outburts but still does not have all the answers ......

Cognitive behavioural therapy. It's a technique that helps you become more aware of how the ways we think and act can influence our moods - I can't insert links but the royal college of psychiatrists has a good explanation on their website. It helps if you learn it from someone who knows what they are doing.

Is CBT similar to talking therapy? the psych I saw the other day said treatment is going to be meds and lots of talking therapy with him as he is a psychotherapist and is very interested in me.... I did feel that he thought things went alot deeper than ADHD and EUPD because he said it would only begin after the meds had settled and the symptoms had calmed so as not to 'upset the apple cart' ....

it is talking but its aimed at getting you to change the way you think and react, more on the negative thoughts I have just had to count so many pink elephants this morning I run out of numbers lol

I have been offered CBT a few times in the past few years. I was only given generic CBT, rather than any ADHD specific stuff. It has been more frustrating than anything, very basic stuff, and not at all suited to my needs. It's nice to talk to someone about stuff, but thats the only benefit I got out of it all. Specific Adult ADHD and Autism support etc does not exist here (Cumbria)

Hi all,
I'm new here, as yet not diagnosed but am having CBT. I feel this has helped to some extent, as it has taught me coping stratergies etc. However, sometimes it feels a bit like I am going round in circles, and that nobody can get to the bottom of what is wrong?! (if that is the right turn of phrase?)
Anybody else feel like this?
