It's not a National Health Service any more.
Each Primary Care Trust (PCT) or Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) decides it's own treatment priorities and they have the power to refuse treatment for certain health problems - which is scary shit when you hear politicians spouting bollox about putting treatment priorities in the hands of GPs - what the hell do they know about anything except generalities?
This is the origin of the famous 'postcode lottery' - you can get treatment for something on one side of the street but not the other.
In the case of a PCT/CCG refusing to treat already diagnosed patients........
It can be that the already diagnosed will continue to get treatment...or not.
It's all in the hands of the local system and whether or not they will bow to various moral and legal/quasi legal arguments in any appeal you mount.
It's complicated and stacked in their favour - you never know what the outcome of anything will be unless it's guaranteed in their charter.

Hi I'm the guest named Barry Adder above - I registered after posting!
Someone told me that some GPs are more sympathetic than others and suggested I changed GPs.
However, I don't understand how this works. I would have thought GPs come under health boards and those health boards cover geographical areas - is that right?
So, I suppose I would have to register with a GP many miles from where I live.
There must be a map you can get hold of or some authority who will be able to let you know the boundaries - maybe?

If it's an issue with the PCT then changing GPs might not help - I think you have to remain within the boundaries of the same PCT.
Having a helpful GP is valuable because they might need to do some extra work if your PCT is unfriendly.
My PCT refused funding for diagnosis/treatment - but I still got it - I appealed their decision and won.
An appeal isn't always successful but if you don't try......

I can't remember the exact conversation with my GP because it was at least a year ago, but I gave him info on a hospital in London (Maudsley?) that has a unit that specialises in adult adhd and also the name and address of a psychiatrist and unit in neighbouring Bridgend (Dr Craddock?) that also specialises in this area. That was the second time I had seen him about adult ADD.
On the first occasion he seemed nothing more than surprised and simply took down what I had to say and said he'll need to refer me to someone.
I then received a letter, I cannot remember if it was from the GP or the PCT but the essence of it was thanks but no thanks. After receiving the letter I went for the 2nd meeting with my GP where I gave him details of where I could get treatment (I may have got that info from browsing here). It was then that my GP said it was the health board or PCT that doesn't recognise adult ADD. My wife, who worked for most of her life in the NHS and knows about these things said he spoke out of turn by telling me straight but I'd rather know what exactly the problem is so I actually appreciated his frankness.
It was a while back. I hit a brick wall and left it. But maybe...
Maybe there is some way forward.

This might be a daft question but without an ADHD expert there (if I've understood you), what use is the clinic? What are you trying to save exactly?

I'm haven't had a dx yet , I got referred by a GP about 2 weeks ago and I'm seeing Dr.Reddy in the Central Clinic in Swansea on the 9th. Long story short after realising that I may have ADHD, I remember that I had met a german psychiatrist through family friends at a social event here in Swansea a few years ago. I asked my Dad for his name, and it turned out to be Prof.Thome (who coincidently turns out to be at the forefront of diagnosing and treating ADHD in adults). After googling him I found out he worked at this private psychotherapy clinic in Swansea called the Lighthouse Clinic. I rang them before seeing the GP, as I was desperate to speak to a professional and wanted to speak to Prof.Thome. Unfortunately , it turns out he moved back to Germany last year, but I was told by this extremely helpful psychotherapist that the only person in the Swansea area who specialises in adult ADHD is this Dr.Reddy(and that he worked and trained with Prof.Thome). He said that I will get referred by the GP to the Central Clinic, and as my referral will state that I am seeking a dx of ADHD, that I will automatically be put through to Dr.Reddy. I received a letter about a week after seeing the GP telling me to ring the Central Clinic to book an appointment. After doing so, I received a letter the next day saying that I have been referred to Dr.Reddy's outpatient clinic. So to answer your question empress21, I do not believe that clinic is being shut down, as I've only just been referred there. I'm very happy that I'm only having to wait 2 weeks to see him. I would try and get referred to the Central Clinic in Swansea.

Services here in Bridgend for Adults with ADHD have been affected greatly, and anyone being discharged from the Adult ADHD clinic will find they are just left to get on with it, and medication just stops, as GP's will not prescibe medication for ADHD. mental health services will not see you unless you suffer from pychosis, even though Adults with ADHD are being told it's those very services who will now be treating you, I know this as I have had first hand experience of it, anyone who has a high funtioning level will be dismissed, unless you have another co-morbid disorder which needs treating, help is no longer offered. there is a Bridgend Adult ADHD support group on facebook. And as for the Swansea clinic, they will not accept referals from outside of swansea, at least that's what they told me.

In fact, if he's not employed now, that could be brilliant for your cause.
It's got that win/win feel to it.

I've finally been refered 2 orchard st Central Clinic Swansea and met with Dr sidiqui this week, he's referred me onto Dr reddy. I've been without a consultant 4 some time now I was. riginally diagnosed 3 years ago by Dr craddock, but had a lot of issues following that and missed a few appointments, when I tried making a new appointment I was told she had left and because I failed 2 keep appointments I couldn't see the replacement they had for her. And was no longer a patient within that Clinic. I've spent almost 2 years now trying 2 get a consultant and finally seem 2 have got somewhere. My concern is now that I know nothing about Dr reddy? Can any1 tell me what he's like? I really liked Dr craddock and found her easy 2 talk 2 about everything, my concern is I won't feel comfortable with Dr reddy, can any1 tell me what he's like please?

The ADHD Adult group is good for those who just have ADHD, any other co-morbid diagnosis and or difficulties where it gets complicated, then don't expect any support, and if you cannot get to the group meetings for whatever reason don't expect to be kept up to date with whats going within those meetings, because you just get excluded, poorly run service, problems with phone service e.g they never answer! good though if your a young ADHDER as you'll be more accepted.

I would suggest going through the wellbeing/counselling service at Swansea uni 1st Clare. they should be able to offer you support, assessment, counselling and/or referral to specialist service depending on your needs

Hi I live in bridgend and I see a Dr Bridget craddock who runs the adhd clinic for adults (NHS), was wondering if the group took off and where is it exactly in swansea? I could also put some flyers around next time i'm at the clinic. Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows where this clinic in Bridgend is (Dr Bridget Craddock), or if it is actually in Bridgend? Many thanks

Can anyone tell me where I can get an re-assessment of ADHD, I live in Bridgend and was diagnosed under Dr Craddock, But now am being told by different psychs that a) I no longer have and b) Ihave it but it's stable. this is causing major problems with myself and the treatment being offered, so they have suggested that I have a new diagnosis by someone who speacilist in ADHD, but this is causing problems as there is no-one living in my area and according to them in the surrounding areas. I have been told Dr Reddy doesn't do new assessments of ADHD only takes on and manage those already assessed, and only to manage their medication. so does anybody know if there is a specialist? Thanks.

After a very very long process of trying to get re-assessed by Dr Reddy in Swansea, after being being told by the senior consultant here in Bridgend (dr Metters) that I no longer have ADHD, I got an assessment done in April by Dr Reddy and he has re-diagnosed me with ADHD, just goes to show that these psychs in Bridgend do not have a clue about ADHD, and it makes me wonder just how many people he has assessed or re-assessed and sent them away telling them they no longer have ADHD. Very frustrating and extremely distressing when you know that they are wrong, and you have got it. its such a shame Dr Craddock left as she has left so many people who for so long was being treated, and now are just left to get on with it, such a huge gap with no support and no understanding from anyone, I feel completely alone and isolated, they check my meds and thats all now, they have no understanding of how it really affects my day to day life, I look okay to them and that's all that matters,I feel like I have to keep proving to them I have it, just what is the point? for me there is little hope for the future

Just wondering if these boards are still being used. Who is available to help people with ADHD now that Dr Craddock has long left the NHS. I like I'm sure other people are struggling with this condition in this area and need some direction/help.
