As a few of you might know, i've been beavering away down here in Swansea to try and start a support group up with monthly meetings. i've had quite a bit of help and advice from people so far, some off this board, which i've acted upon and it's all in hand.. ( not sure which hand - i usually get left and right mixed up )
I've had offers of meeting rooms at very resonable prices and informed a number of organisations of my intent who are happy to take leaflets and posters off me and promote the group when everything is finalised.
I've also been in touch with Prof. J Thome who runs private and NHS adult adhd clinics here and i've been very touched by his enthusiastic and supportive response.
BUT WHAT I NEED NOW IS PEOPLE.. i love the idea of the saying " If you build it they will come",... But will they?.
Is there anyone out there in ADHD cyberland, willing to volunteer to help with the workload? This group needs to be promoted so that people know about it. Not just in Swansea, but further afield South and West. I was thinking that perhaps with four or five people on the case, four or five lots of brilliant minds full of ideas all working together ( if thats possible for adhd! ) things would get moving a lot quicker. Would anyone be willing to meet up with me in person to dicsuss things.. form a comittee or whatever it is you need do to get things done.
I would also love to hear your responses to this idea as there may not even be a need for a group this area? In which case i'll just go back to watching day time telly alot!!!!!
Information about your group can be added to our website, as well as the Bristol group's page.
Have you checked out using Google sites to build a web site. It's free, and looks simple to set up. I'm asking because then we can link sites, and it will help to advertise your site, and people can send you queries through the website.
Sorry I'm not in your neck of the woods but think it's an excellent idea. If you did a "flyer" would Prof Thome put it in his consulting room so you could enlist the help of some others or if he gives out any leaflets about adhd to his patients could he add your contact no?
Hi I live in bridgend and I see a Dr Bridget craddock who runs the adhd clinic for adults (NHS), was wondering if the group took off and where is it exactly in swansea? I could also put some flyers around next time i'm at the clinic.

Hi my name is Kevin Watson. I am a diagnosed AD/HD and dyslexia sufferer. In the time I have spent researching the subjects I have found that there is no or very little support in the South Wales area. I am looking at starting a support group for AD/HD sufferers, parents, carers, family members and partners of AD/HD sufferers with the view to expand so that users can access professional advice on medication management, drug or alcohol abuse, debt management, counselling, relaxation classes and nutritional advice all to make life more organised. Any other topic’s you can think of that might be of benefit to others please getting in contact via E-mail on email@example.com Negotiations are currently underway as to a venue for meetings. Keep a look out for posts as soon as new info/updates are available if you have any problems or are in need of advice or jut a chat about what is going on in your experience with ADD or ADHD feel free to contact us.
I'm haven't had a dx yet , I got referred by a GP about 2 weeks ago and I'm seeing Dr.Reddy in the Central Clinic in Swansea on the 9th. Long story short after realising that I may have ADHD, I remember that I had met a german psychiatrist through family friends at a social event here in Swansea a few years ago. I asked my Dad for his name, and it turned out to be Prof.Thome (who coincidently turns out to be at the forefront of diagnosing and treating ADHD in adults). After googling him I found out he worked at this private psychotherapy clinic in Swansea called the Lighthouse Clinic.
I rang them before seeing the GP, as I was desperate to speak to a professional and wanted to speak to Prof.Thome. Unfortunately , it turns out he moved back to Germany last year, but I was told by this extremely helpful psychotherapist that the only person in the Swansea area who specialises in adult ADHD is this Dr.Reddy(and that he worked and trained with Prof.Thome). He said that I will get referred by the GP to the Central Clinic, and as my referral will state that I am seeking a dx of ADHD, that I will automatically be put through to Dr.Reddy.
I received a letter about a week after seeing the GP telling me to ring the Central Clinic to book an appointment. After doing so, I received a letter the next day saying that I have been referred to Dr.Reddy's outpatient clinic.
So to answer your question empress21, I do not believe that clinic is being shut down, as I've only just been referred there. I'm very happy that I'm only having to wait 2 weeks to see him. I would try and get referred to the Central Clinic in Swansea.
Do what I did and get a referral to out of area clinic in Bristol on NHS. I live near Cardiff and am under Anurin Bevan trust who fund me to see Bristol clinic and get medication. As no alternative services in Wales they renew it yearly. Precedent set so feel free to use me as a reason other parts of NHS in wales or GPs should refer and find you like me
I'm from near Barry. My GPs health board (or whatever it is) does not recognise ADD/ADHD and so it seems I can't get a diagnosis through the NHS. But, I understand you can go private which may cost £700 - £800 but then I guess, armed with the diagnosis, I might be able to get prescriptions through the NHS for medications and any treatment that may be available????
On the other hand, if my GP's health board does not recognise ADD/ADHD in adults it seems unlikely I'll be able to get prescriptions for suitable medications, even if i have a private diagnosis.
Which makes me wonder, what would be the point of a private diagnosis?
