It is thought to affect 3 to 7% of school age children. [1] Research suggests that 80% of children diagnosed with ADHD continue to experience symptoms during adolescence and 67% continue to have symptoms into adulthood. [1] Extrapolating that out, that means: In 2010 there were 6,620,000 children in the UK aged between 5 and 16 (i.e. 'school age') [2] That means between 198,600 and 463,400 have ADHD according to the first ADDISS statistic above. If 67% of those continue to have symptoms into adulthood as the second statistic states, that means 133,062 to 310,478 of children at school age in 2010 will have adult ADHD. With the population estimated at around 61.8m in 2009 [3], that would mean: Between 1 in 199 and 1 in 464 of people in the UK at school age in 2010 will grow up to have adult ADD. Please note that this is extrapolation, not fact and that it doesn't really tell you how many people actually currently have it. ADHD is the most common behavioural disorder in the UK. It is estimated that the condition affects 3–9% of school-aged children and young people. Worldwide, around 2% of adults may be affected by ADHD.

I have a feeling there will be quite an avalanche of newly diagnosed sufferers in the next few years, once public awareness is increased and the medical professionals (I use the term lightly) pull their collective heads out of the sand. Oh, I have just depressed myself! :-)
