This thread is for the subject line indicated. Please assist in keeping it strictly on topic otherwise it'll be like other threads which get de-railed, which tends to defocus the subject matter. Not that I would ever participate to de-rail threads! GAsp, not me guv!

Of course, there is already tons of info out there on the internets! but this post is just a note to the fact that coeliac disease can be misdiagnosed as IBS............
Symptoms of coeliac disease range from mild to severe (probably dependant on how much gluten etc you eat in the time period....) and can vary between individuals. They include bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, wind, tiredness, anaemia, headaches, mouth ulcers, weight loss - but not in all cases, skin problems, depression, joint or bone pain and nerve problems.
__
I was doing some reading online and noticed that apparently, a number of people worldwide ended up getting a positive diagnosis of coeliac (in the case of the ncbi link below) or very near to it, after coming off the atkins diet or similar. This is probably because atkins etc is a very low carb diet which therefore contains far less and in some cases, none, of the trigger gluten and whatever else is discovered as time goes on...
This science link explains it better, but there's a messageboard discussion about similar.

I think that's quite interesting to note that a percentage of people could be misdiagnosed with IBS or sold short with IBS, whilst actually being in the subclinical or clinical (correctly diagnosed) category for coeliac disease............
There's more out there.

After a few weeks, he went back to the consultant who ran a blood test to check for coeliac disease. This is a sensitivity to gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Within 24 hours the results came back positive. The initial diagnosis of IBS was wrong.
From the link above.
Most importantly..............
I can only hope that medicine gets more advanced and does not slump backwards for the majority.

It's a common misdiagnosis. In fact Dr Chris was lucky - most coeliacs have to wait on average 13 years from when they first experience symptoms to get an accurate diagnosis.
Dr Chris's experience has convinced him that the medical profession is too quick to diagnose IBS.
Most importantly..............
With a gluten-free diet, patients will start to feel better within a month and the villi can grow back within a year. However Dr Chris hasn't found it easy to stick to the diet. 'At home it's fine. My wife cooks and I eat plenty of vegetables, potatoes, fish and poultry. But when I'm out I do find it difficult.'
