jeez, I think I'm gonna go mad(der)! For months now I have constantly had to clear my throat, but can't shift whatever's there. There's no phlegm or anything, nothing lodged there eg food or whatever. it's 24/7. Wondering: is this a side effect of dexamfetamine? Does anyone else have this? It's driving me and the family mad, wakes my wife up at night, it's getting so painful and it's embarrassing in the company of others. It also panics me as it's almost as if my throat is constricting. I went to the dr about it a couple of months ago (it's got worse since) and he was not able to determine any problem, saw the asthma nurse but that's all clear too. Will go back on Monday.

I know my throat has been playing up but I'm not on that stuff you are. I go to talk sometimes and my throat is closed and stuck, it feels thick inside for some reason. Zena keeps telling me off because she says I make her jump trying to clear and open it.
Then again my Mam does the throat clearing alot, very, VERY loudly, it makes anyone jump too. Maybe you've done it for ages but not realised. Does the meds you're on make you get a dry mouth and throat too? Could be a mixture of both these things maybe.

Hi, my son goes through phases (of several months sometimes) of doing this and he can't explain why. He's 8 and has a dx of ASD & we suspect also ADHD. We've always assumed it to be some sort of tic (he's not on any meds), but as I say, it comes and goes. Our doctor suggested maybe he had some sort of drip from his sinuses going down the back of his throat that he wasn't aware of, but our son doesn't think this is the case.
Don't suppose this helps much, but it can never do any harm to drink plenty of water, and you can flush your sinuses with a sinus-rinse kit from your chemist which should help if this is at the root of it. (I use one all the time for sinusitis and find it really effective - plus I just like the sensation of using it!!)
Also just noticed your post says your throat feels constricted at night - have you checked out globus - it's a stress related condition that makes part of your throat 'close off' and can lead to a sensation like a lump in your throat that constricts airflow. It's perfectly harmless and can be helped by speech & language therapy, but can seem alarming when you have it.

thanks for the replies. have been looking at globus and post nasal drip on google, could well be it. last night it was terrible, worst ever.
the "thing" i'm trying to catch in my throat if you know what i mean feels like it is about 4 or 5 inches below the adams apple, but can't get to it. not even sure there's anything actually there.
i am deffo going to seek medical help, will call dr tomorrow for appointment.

I had that, and although for some reason it only came on at night, I still convinced myself I had cancer. Doc put a camera down my throat and told me there was nothing wrong. It was a stress thing - like an inside tic. It used to be known as globus hystericus.
Amazingly, once i knew what it was, it went away and never came back (unlike the stress).
Until I started mph. It's not as bad as before, but I can feel the same muscle constriction at times. I think mph can make your muscles clench a bit - I also had a bit of a clenchy jaw at the start, which seemed to pass.
But still see your doc, just in case. They can check your throat out really quickly.

I also thought "throat cancer" after a bit of reckless googling. Since I have also lost well north of a stone in weight in two months quite a few symptoms were there. Will ask about that but I am certain it's something much less sinister.
