I know this has come up before, so sorry if I'm repeating stuff that's already been said...
Basically, when I went for my assessment and was diagnosed with mild to moderate ADD, the psych asked me how coffee makes me feel. I told him it makes me feel jittery and he said if I'm ADD it shouldn't. Is this right?
Also, just started on Concerta XL 18mg three days ago. I kind of feel quiet inside after I've taken it, but 10 hours later, BAM!!! all of a sudden (within minutes) i get dreadful tight headache and feel really unwell/sick/horrible. Is this normal in your experience?
Hope to hear back and thanks.
Tinks
p.s. seem to have normal appetite.

Why shouldn't coffee make you jittery?
It should make you feel a little clearer headed for a while but all the rest of the standard coffee effects will be there - we're not that different from 'normal'.
Also Concerta is famous for having a nasty come down - lots of people find it a problem.
Give it more time to settle down - if you're still suffering in a couple of weeks then it might be time to switch.
Surprisingly a lot of people I know have changed from Concerta to Ritalin and found it easier going (which confounds the docs no end).

Too much caffeine gives me palpitations.
I tried concerta, and didn't like it - it didn't release smoothly, so I got unexpected dips, it made me jittery, and had a nasty rebound where I felt very depressed. Ritalin IR is easier for me - the release curve is consistent, so I can plan for when it's peaking, no jitters, and although I still get rebound, I suspect I could smooth it better with a half tab at the end of my day.
But as pd says, everyone is different, and some folks love concerta. Trick is finding what works for you, and making sure you tell the psych what's happening.

First thing I do every morning on the way to work is get a capuccinno, it calms my mind, clears the fog and gets it ready for the day; I get real narky if I don't get one. I don't drink them too late in the day, because they do keep me awake and I do not normally have more than two per day.
When I was on Concerta I kinda went off them. I am off the Concerta now, so back on the cappo's. Coffee, coffee, coffee!!!

@ Sherry - I have exactly the same with Concerta, no interest in coffee at all whereas before I was the latte king and couldn't walk past a coffee shop without popping in... slowed me down no end on some high streets lol In the past I always used to say I was hypersensitive to caffeine tho as when I was trying not to drink coffee, if I had one, within 2 days I'd have a caffeine headache (untreatable by painkillers) and anxiety. Only way to avoid it was to keep topped up. Don't miss it tho. Tbh between stopping coffee and red wine my teeth are whiter

I don't drink coffee much, but it doesn't seem to have any kind of stimulant effect on me, in fact I used to drink it as a bedtime drink!

I've read that coffee often makes people with adhd feel better.
This is definitely true in my case, it feels smooth and I feel in control and focused.
However, I can still get jittery sometimes if I have it...certain days, strong coffee.
What is this 'shouldn't' make you feel jittery? Sounds like he's just reading from a checklist, when it's more complicated in real life.

I think it's to do with the fact that ADDers take stimulant medications, but don't feel hyped up on them... If we don't get hyped from stimulant meds, we "shouldn't" get hyped from coffee either...

Seahorse, I think you're absolutely spot on there... that's what it is. They think that if we don't get a "buzz" from the meds, then we shouldn't from the coffee. The Concerta is making me feel crap... so I didn't take it today. The come-down is horrible. Maybe I will ask about the Ritalin... Thanks for all the comments.

I find if I've had my Concerta some days coffee can make my jaw ache or give me shiny vision, the occasional palps too but not often depending on the coffee and what I've eaten. I do however find I crash harder if i've had coffee. I think it's because of how I metabolize it? I also can not drink tea or coffee after 10am or I will not go to bed. Especially tea as I tend to metabolize that differently.

I have had the opposite effect, I started with Ritalin and found it made me feel like I was on egg shells all the time. The lack of sleep was immense and well I just didn't like it. Been on 18mg of Concerta and just been increased to 36mg and and finding it a lot better. I do notice a come down in the evening, now that it has been mentioned on here - to be honest I forget a lot of things and I guess my symptoms are on that list, unless I get them frequently they are passing events that I just seem to plod on with.
I didn't drink a lot of coffee prior to taking meds, but have noticed if I have more than one a day I am FLYING 100 miles an hour so I have been told to have one good cup a day and leave the diet coke alone.
All the effects are new and to be honest over all I find myself more focused and consistent so if I am a little hyper with it, at least I am going in a good direction rather than all over the place so working with accepting my situation more than any thing else.

Coffee tends to make me jittery and then really tired. I prefer tea because of this.
I had horrible crashes on Ritalin with tiredness, depression and nausea. On Concerta the come down is no where near as severe. I might get a little sleepy, but usually I hardly notice the effect wearing off as it happens so slowly.

This is obvious with coffee but did anyone know, concerta and ritalin dehydrates you too! The headache you described can sumply be resolved by drinking more water

If you also suffer Anxiety coffee can make you jittery with ADHD. Jaw ache is a symptom of stress/Anxiety, we are often not aware when we grit our teeth.

Yeah i only found out recently that concerta dehydrates you, also the docs wrong coffee doesnt make ADHD worse, as if you also get Anxiety or are stressed coffee makes this worse and as a result of this, stress makes ADHD symptoms worse!
