well i got to start somewheres so lets start with this, my last DX was a personality disorder caused by drug addiction. there are many personality disorders and dr X did not specify what personality disorder not only has this test proved that i could have aspergers to my many other conditions! these results prove i would not have -anti social personality disorder -neuropathic personality disorder i could have "fucked off with forgion doctors that think they are choclate but in reality they know fuck all personality disorder" or maybe i got "my local mental heath team are murdering fucking cunts that will pin a delusional disorder on you if it benifits the truth not getting out personality disorder" "this Adult ADHD Dr knows fuck all about ADHD personality disorder" the next thing i'm going to do is disprove this doctors crap report by posting school reports from when i was 11 years old and maybe at that time probally had done some low grade cannibis and had the occasional drink but was no addict ;D

but before i put a list of school reports up something has come to my attention- say i do have aspergers and have ADHD as a comorid effect i have been witnessed snoring, waking up, and turning blue in my sleep and i'm waiting to go to a sleep clinic i now know i'm on the list:) the only thing i got that they cannot dispute is an Epilepsy DX two triggers i know of that induced my seizures is certain shandy brands, but mostly lack of sleep! -sleeping pills do not effect me -i'm finding that valium is not effecting me as it used to -anisthetics don't have an effect on me my G.P is saying to go down the route of C.B.T for the A.D.H.D due to the epilepsy but cbt is not going to fix the problem or comorbid effects! M.P.H is used in sleep apneoa if i get a good sleep wake routine i believe the epilepsy can be controlled without the anti convulsant medication! so use MPH to kill 3 birds with one stone i saw a doctor x and i've requested i go back to him i told him that my epilepsy had a kindlin effect meaning that i started with minor seizures and progressed to larger seizures. psychology.wikia.com/wiki/Kindlingbut this kindlin effect is used on a model for bipolar to show that the condition gets worse so Dr x could have been thinking in that respect! he told me that Epilepsy does not have a kindlin effect and this guy has party wrote in a book on pyschology in epilepsy but i'm afraid in my case it had a kindlin effect. lol ;D when i first met Dr x he gave me a big smile and you know i how our minds work this was totally prolonged and surreal to me - he could be gay and fucking trying to get up me or he could be experementing on me namely giving me a big smile to see if i smile back! in other words testing my mirror neurons ;D the last time i saw doctor x i had a bunk bipolar NOS dx he diagnosed me as cyclothymic this does come under the 5 types of bipolar disorder in the usa but in this country it just means that you're mood changes in cycles. the last time i saw doctor x- my son had not been diagnosed with ADHD my daughter was not diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, or Epilepsy so this time around there is more evidance and he will see that i have not changed much unmedicated so bipolar will be out of the equasion ;D

phil,
sorry to butt in to your thread, but I must say it resonates with me. I've had a long term diagnosis of generalised anxiety disorder with a nice touch of seasonal affective disorder on top of it.
Last psychiatric review I got the registrar...who after 10 minutes tried to tell me that my very emanent psychiatrist from back home was wrong and I was Bipolar II.
Gloves off and stopped being a good patient at this point (I am a clinician, and I try to behave properly and give other clinicians the right to do their job with me), recalled the DSM-IV for GAD and BPII from memory and gave him the reasons he had made a mistake based on the differential diagnosis points. Then I proceeded to give him the fundamental lessons in patient clinician interaction and the use of open and closed questioning (something I train people on as part of my job).
Funny thing, no follow up recalls for annual medication reviews in...oh...4 years!

Hi Phil, Theres no such thing as a "personality disorder" anyway, the phrase gets used by shithead, deadhead psychiatrists & was dreamt up by the government to control people that think, act & speak differently to how they want them to. Its to try to make people conform to the bullshit they dish out, these types of labels will control the way you are treated by doctors, employers, hospitals, consultants, insurance companies, foreign countries, the police & ambulance services & can fuck up your whole existence, until you get them removed from your medical record, they are basically a complete character assaination. Did i mention they are also probably illegal!? Check out the universal declaration of human rights paying particular attention to articles 1,3,5,6,7,12,18 & 29. ( i believe we are all unique individuals are we not, this is what makes us human?) www.thefreedictionary.com/securitywww.thefreedictionary.com/personTranslating as freedom from doubt & anxiety with regard to ones individual character (person) articles 3 & 6 www.thefreedictionary.com/degradingwww.thefreedictionary.com/degradeA label of "personality disorder" is degrading to the person (individual character), article 5, It will debase you by lowering your moral character & dignity How you ask?? because this is the person you will be treated as after they fuck you with one of these bullshit labels counsellingresource.com/distress/personality-disorders/understanding/index.htmlcounsellingresource.com/distress/personality-disorders/understanding/pd-relationships-part2.htmlcounsellingresource.com/distress/personality-disorders/understanding/pd-relationships-part3.htmlBet if you wrote on these pleb psych's records that they "may be a sex offender" & they couldn't have it removed due to the " freedom of information act" they would have you in court before you could even get the pen back in your pocket. Selfish, clueless wankers really who shouldn't be in their jobs.

Rabbitype: There are clearly diagnosable disorders, otherwise I would not have been so utterly horrified when I began to read about the symptoms of ADHD and recognised that I was reading a quite explicit and detailed description of myself. Pidgeonholing does not help but a scientific approach in itself is not harmful, I don't think. Well, I do think, therefore I am etc but you know what I mean!

Hi Stephen100 : Yes of course there are diagnosable conditions & disorders & there should be, ADHD/ADD being one of many, my point is that to call someones "person" into question is to call their whole "character" into question. It is in fact saying that their character is faulty & that they are a bad person & lower in moral worth than a "normal" human being. It is completely degrading & i believe it is illegal.
As all human beings are unique, it is immoral to claim someones "person" is disordered & faulty when we are all just at different points on a scale or spectrum.
Now if it were to change from say "obsessive compulsive personality disorder" to a person with obsessive compulsive type tendancies, or from "emotionally unstable personality disorder" to a person having problems with self regulation, then these would be fair, wouldn't degrade, damage or discriminate the person & be factually correct by definition.
It is the way the character is assasinated that needs to be adressed & changed because the fact of the matter is that when these destructive "labels" are attached to people, often without their knowledge, they will then be treated as such by all the people listed above, & if you have read my links you will understand the damage those beliefs & attitudes can inevitably manifest into someones life.
Also there are a lot of adults out there being diagnosed with "personality disorders" that should really be diagnosed with ADHD & the treatments & medications are completely different. It is a massive issue !

We all got our little spidie senses intuition and intelligence, basically I came here over a year ago knowing very little about adult ADHD and I am 100% Sure I have combined ADHD but I'm a novice! And what you would call unqualified to have a real medical opinion! So you put this in the hands of someone you think is qualified but on the day I went to see a qualified Adult ADHD expert namely Doctor x things changed and I don't like doing things at short notice, or being rushed, or change! I don't know if this is even an ADHD trait? Roland (susan) confirmed that Dr x was an expert in adult ADHD and put my mind at ease least I would see a professional! But on the day I had the rug pulled from under me and things changed but I would not say for the worse it knocked the inattention out of me and I was more alert, anxious, so on the test my results where predominantly hyperactive as my mothers survey on me where predominantly inattentive! I put this down to change on the day! I had confirmation that others had seen x but I did not get to see x I got mention so I can't say I was at ease at the time but this is not a bad thing as the anxiety of the situation must have caused a chemical reaction and give me a bout of hyper focus At no time did this dr x ever claim she was an expert in adult ADHD she said she was aware of adult ADHD! But that don't mean anything I could say I'm aware of jumbo jets this don't mean I can fly one! So if x did not have a clue how many types of adhd there is I only leaves me with a few conclusions- A she was not qualified B she was playing stooge to try and save the NHS cash in law suits that they won't win and save a lot of a shit local MHT getting P45's At the end of the day what I'm writing in here is getting back to my G.P for starters and from having the attitude of what do I know about adult ADHD? It is an american thing that effects kids! He seems to be willing to help me and has either developed parkingsons or I scare the shit out of him! ;D I have been labelled a hypochondria in the passed due to me having this and that wrong with me and that wrong with me but if that is the case I would ravel in the fact that I was dx'ed bipolar! My mental health team could come up with the shit that I'm in denial and due to social stigma I won't accept that I have a mental disorder! I have had panic attacks that is truely a mental disorder I have been treated for! Agoraphobia There is a possibility I have unipolar but no DX I could do lots of things like write to nice and get fobbed off like andy did so that just goes to show what a white elephant NICE really is, a lot like the NHS! Or if you like you could describe it as a flea market full of fucking parasites ;D This is just the latest facet of a long on going saga of the shit I've suffered!

Hi Phil,
My joke is I am a practitioner, because I need to practice to become any good at what I do!
My being patient focused has got me into no end of trouble over the last couple of years - health industry merely pays lipservice to this idea, and woe betide you if you actually think it is a good idea.
I personally blame it on the emphasis on "evidence based practice" put on health training, so most clinicians assume that if the patient falls outside the diagnostic pathway, it is the patient being non-compliant rather than the pathway only being predictive of around 80% of cases.
Patient centeredness is at the heart of "practice based evidence" - because you listen to the patient and their concerns, and you fit your practice to suit them and their condition. Then you use what should be well trained observational skills, to see what impact the changes have made on them.
I've got a case on the go where the patient is being told that her health improvement could not possibly be to do with the dietary changes she has made...yet the interesting thing is because she is blind she has to rely on others to help her, so she gets contaminations more often than is really desirable and every time gets the same symptoms. Oh, placebo effect say the medics. Yeah, right. How can you have a placebo when you don't even know that you are getting a possible contamination, because you can't see the fricking thing.
(Helen picks up her soap box and tucks it under her arm before stomping off)

p.s. On the subject of personality disorders. Most of the ones I have met are walking around causing no end of trouble for other people...and are working in the health service.
I know they exist, but I also have had some fascinating conversations with a psych nurse who has kanner's style autism and he has a convincing argument as to why you can't have a PD and any type of ADHD/ASD in the same person, and if the psychiatrist puts both on a patient, then they are just fricking lazy.

Lets say a "person" is born with ADHD, which as we know is a genetic disorder & caused by a chemical imbalance, it has nothing to do with the persons "character" as they were born with this condition.
This person then goes on to suffer symptoms & behavioural problems that cause anxiety problems, depression, anger issues, maybe drug & alcohol problems & so on & so on. Maybe they end up in prison?
All these issues the person suffers have absolutely nothing to do with the moral character of the person, they are simply negative symptoms caused by a neurochemical imbalance which the person has no control over & are completely ego syntonic to them.
A "personality disorder" is apparantly a problem with the moral character of a particular "person" & the behaviours, thoughts & actions of that person are therefore ego dystonic to them. Hence the fact they cannot be treated, they have to want to change, it is a choice issue. They have to feel their behaviours are wrong to do this, which would in turn make that behaviour ego syntonic to them.
I'm no expert but i would have to say i feel it would be psychologically impossible for someones negative behaviours, thoughts & actions to be both ego syntonic & ego dystonic to them at the same time.
With that in mind then how could someone possibly have both, the psych that tries to put both on a patient, or fails to fully investigate & decifer one from the other, by talking to the patient & evaluating & confirming factual evidence, is indeed frickin lazy... they are also dangerous to their patients.
I have had many dealings with the health service workers you talk about & in my eyes they are really poor excuses for human beings who reap large pay packets as payment for their clinical negligence, lack of conscientiousness, integrity & respect & should all be sacked & held accountable. Then our health service might start to improve.
If ADHD is the primary core from birth, ADHD cannot become a "personality disorder".... unless someone can factually prove otherwise to me... this is my argument.. any thoughts anyone?

By the way, maybe my view on the validity of personality disorders is strong as a psych tried to label me with one of these after a 15 minute meeting with virtually no information... He couldn't have been further from the truth.
There are obviously morally dysfunctional, ego dystonic characters out there, it is still probably illegal to use the phrase "personality disorder" to describe their condition though.

Ok, I haven't read all of this thread as I can't be arsed! But dipping in and out, I do kind of see your point. It is a little bit an issue of semantics but I also acknowledge that semantics in such a serious area can be critical to others' perceptions and consequently quality of care. However, it occurred to me that if you removed the word "personality" from the description of ADHD then the matter may be resolved, since it is in fact, a disorder (I hope we can all agree on that) and then it occurred to me (typical thought process) that there is no word "personality" in the medical term "ADHD" in the first place - otherwise it would be "ADHPD"! It's not classed as a personality disorder on a clinical level, although the Daily Mail may wish to suggest otherwise. I rest my case.

doctor x was a 2 bit consultant psychiatrist that loved to play devils advocate with me interrorgate me for hours then says " i will play devils advocate you say that you have delusions of grandure and i will get you probation!" after my care plan meeting when i mentioned this taliban style interrorgation brought on suicidal idelation after i could not take none of this shit anymore! alegedly just after my care plan meeting Dr x had a massive heart attack? this could be true my x told me this but it could be total bollocks i did not see x have this heart attack and after all they fuck with peoples heads! they could be appealing to my better nature make me feel guilty so i dont proceed in making what x did a criminal matter and suing the NHS! the last time i saw x his hair was white! but again this could be another cheap trick amonia on the hair blach it make him appear he has had a heart attack! a good test in psychology would be to get him infront of the beak and let my solicitor rip shit out of him and see if he flakes out with a heart attack there and then have medics on standby just incase he pops his flip flops and meets up with his old friend the devil to whom he advocates

I'm keeping a blog now any info new stuff will be updated daily in that at the end of the day I got to think the ADHD won't Kill me but the sleep apneoa probally will so I got to try and get somthing done about that the link to my blog is in the lounge under the sub heading I'm a blogger! ;D But I am still going to battle on with the fight to get to see a Adult that knows about the condition and knows about nice guidelines and does not breach them! By letting a student doctor that does not even know combined Adhd does not exist! I have tried every avenue and given these people enough chances to put things right! But they are dodgy and if certain people listened to me I would not have had six years of crap!

I read somewhere that PD's and ADHD often co-exist anyway. I've never heard of a personality disorder being caused by drug abuse? I thought the cause is still one of those great unknowns. Could be genetic or down to childhood experiences, or both. The type that's usually associated with addiction is boderline PD, with addiction often being an effect of having one.

I'm afraid it is you talking bollocks my friend!
Personality definition : The quality or condition of being a person
Person definition : The composite of characteristics that make up an individual personality; the self
Individual definition : A human regarded as a unique personality
Unique definition : Being the only one of its kind
Disorder definition : An ailment that affects the function of mind or body: eating disorders and substance abuse...... or: To disturb the normal physical or mental health of; derange.
Normal definition : Conforming with, adhering to, or constituting a norm, standard, pattern, level, or type; typical:
Now seeing as we have just established that personality is 'unique' & a disorder is a disturbance of something ' normal' ....& that normal is to 'conform' or 'adhere' to a 'standard'... then is it not a fact that by definition there really is no such thing as a 'personality disorder' & to claim such a thing is to directly conflict both natural law & the English language.
The conditions you speak of Mr or Mrs "LabelsAreOk" are defined by extremes of traits found in us all... they simply represent the extreme diversities of the human race & are the manifestation of interactions between genetics & life experiences... but at no point can they be called disorders as something unique cannot be in any way 'normal' ... who are we to say what is normal?? These are words used in a distorted way by the powers that be to control & supress us as human beings through conformity!
Lets take the definition of psycopath for instance : A person with an antisocial personality disorder, manifested in aggressive, perverted, criminal, or amoral behavior without empathy or remorse.
This person does not have a 'personality disorder' that is just a phrase dreamt up to label, manipulate & control anyone they choose to categorise via that definition..... quite simply that person just has some extreme traits that are undesirable to many other people, to people similar to themselves they would appear 'normal'!
How on earth can we fight & defeat stigma when even people with 'mental health problems' cannot see the basic truth that as human beings we are all 'unique'... which in turn negates any notion of there being such thing as 'normal' personality.... we need to bin these ridiculous personality disorder labels immediately, embrace our diversity, see the light & get into the god damn 21st century.
Only then will the issues society has created surrounding mental health begin to change.
I suggest you stop reading just one side of the story ..i,e the official one & start to think & feel for yourself & conduct some thorough research before you claim something to be complete & utter bollocks again!!
'Personality disorders' 100% do not exist..... extreme variations of personality types do!
