For some reason the counsellor reckons I have OCD not ADHD.
I have no habitual routines or cleaning regimes.
He said the way I is ocd, he said you don't need routines etc to have ocd.
I'm very confused at the moment, he thinks I am still in a childlike state. Really annoying, I was hoping it would be a yes you do.
Anyone else get diadnosed with ocd first?

This is a 'yeah, yeah, yeah are you actually qualified to to tell me I don't have ADHD?' scenario.
It's a counsellor. If it was a consultant psychiatrist you should take notice. Counsellor? No.
The only people who can say you have ADHD are also the only ones who can tell you you don't. It's called diagnosis and it's a yes or no, nobody else can say that to you (unless you're patently nuts).
It's upsetting but it's fairly common to have 'fully qualified' people tell you complete bollox about ADHD. If they're not fully qualified enough to make an ADHD diagnosis then you can ignore their stupid opinion.

Hey, I got told by a JHO (very junior doctor) that I had Bipolar II not Generalised Anxiety Disorder, 10 minutes into a review consultation, which I only attended because my GP insisted I needed to see a properly qualified person to say I could stay on Effexor.
I admit, I had fun at that point. I recalled both diagnoses from memory and proceeded to give him a point by point analysis of the differential diagnosis - THEN I gave him a quick critique of his interpersonal skills (I am a clinician trainer, so I am qualified to comment on that!) - I suspect he is finally out of therapy for that experience about 4 years later.

OCD symptoms can come from ADHD forgetfulness. I'm always checking I locked things, because my working memory is so poor, not because I'm OCD.

I have OCD ADHD GAD! Im collecting letters after my name! Twix is correct routine does help deal with important stuff due to terrible memories ADHD causes, If we didnt develop OCD nothing would get done!! Some OCD traits turn up when your memory is particularly bad and its the fear of forgetting stuff, and needing some sort of control in your head so stuff controls you! I know quite a bit about OCD unfortunately as I was surrounded by it as a child, but I don`t think my traits are too obvious or too bad, but its definately not something to worry about as worrying will only make it worse. Unless rituals are getting in the way of everyday life, don`t worry too much, its a coping strategy that you obviously need. Take things in at your pace, you seem to be on a path of self awareness, its not all bad, this self awareness will lead to a better understanding of your brain and then you can learn how to deal with stuff and move forward. Good luck! :-)

I had OCD tendencies before diagnosis. I was always checking I'd turned stuff off, as I had a regular habit of leaving the iron on, or my hair straighteners, etc, etc and having the totally rational fear that my home would burn down. This has lessened since taking meds, as I now know whether I've turned things off (usually I have, but do still forget sometimes - my meds don't kick in until after I leave for work). I also had GAD during my teens.

I got to agree with PD counsellors do talk though there arse and are unqualified to diagnose! As for OCD I don't consider making checks from passed experances as OCD it's just traits we learn due to passed mistakes drilled into our subconsious! Qualifide doctors whom claim to specialise in ADHD get it wrong or talk a load of bollocks ;D According to my ADHD specialist in order to have ADHD as an adult you must have sleep problems as a child! This is what you call fabricated bull shit from an expert! How come I have 2 children with ADHD that sleep fine and have no sleep problems! Hey helen how do you know you're not suffering from ANOSOGNOSIA lol ;D that's what I'm expecting my next LABEL to be ;D I will know my fate in the next 30 days! See wogwan but I'm so impaticiant days seem like weeks
