Hi guys,
Just have a quick question from observing both my ex and my current beloved (both recently diagnosed ADHD)...how many of you have features of speech hesitancy (not quite a stammer, but odd pauses in sentences) if you are not medicated/undermedicated.
J has been unmedicated for a couple of days while his care is transferred to the NHS (a cock-up on the scripts), and along with having the worst case of fidgets on the planet, he is back to having really marked speech hesitancy.
M while on holiday was having to keep on a lower dose a bit because he had mispacked his concerta and was a bit short if he had been at usual dose...and again the speech hesitancy.
Made me really stop and think about the subtle signs...
Hope all are well
Helen

Yep - me too! When I was on Concerta I was usually fairly coherent - but now I'm not I often I can't find the right words, talk jibberish, or completely forget what it was I was saying! I often have to refer to 'that thing' and point, as I can't think what 'that thing' is - and the long pauses are very common too

I have this problem too - forgetting words, jumbling words, mind going blank mid sentence, etc. Concerta seems to help with this a little.

I just seem to get stammery and tongue tied and .... yep, hesitant in odd places in my speech.....even when i am feeling fine about the subject i am talking about......it can really make you feel quite self concious

Thanks guys! It seems this is a pretty majorly common effect, and the meds do improve things.
Been helping J with his battle to get our PCT to continue to Rx his meds - turns out that they don't think there is enough evidence for medicating adults with ADHD so have red listed all ADHD meds for those over 18 years of age, and they can only be prescribed on a shared care agreement with a psychiatrist. So we are now going to insist he is referred into the NHS for his follow-up appointments.
I'm mid reading an HTA from the NIH in the US and they have done the numbers and show medicating adults is economically worth while, so I will fight dirty if I have to and get the MP involved (we just won't mention that neither of us voted for him).
It was a most interesting discussion I had with the chief pharmacist in the PCT (love having contacts), you could tell she didn't believe in adult ADHD, but when I pointed out that J was not a student looking for mind enhancement, but was an adult with a complex health history and that there was categorical evidence of improvement, she conceded there might be individual cases...do I smell an equalities case coming on?

What's an HTA, Helen? Is it something you can share with us? It sounds interesting.

I find i can't remember words and sometimes in sentence i will use the wrong words, a lot. not so much on my meds though. I find it really difficult to express myself sometimes and am misunderstood a lot.

i'm not medicated and have trouble with this a fair bit. i thought it was just me though and i don't dwell on it too much but it is annoying sometimes.
i stutter and squish words together or just get into a total muddle and it's all like dhsdhsdhgasgz until i finally get it out.

I find my speech suddenly stops mid sentence. I also sometimes change my sentence structure mid sentence. I am not medicated.

Do you think that it could be an anxiety thing?
I guess if you have ADHD, you get used to people reacting badly when you say the wrong thing, or speak at the wrong time. Stammer is apparently caused by consistently being criticized for speaking*.
I also wonder if this can be generalized to other parts of our lives. Is part of the reason we procrastinate due to an expectation of failure and criticism based on experience? Less sure on that one.
But yeah, being anxious in social situations, or dealing with authorities, can come out different ways. I know it shits me up good and proper.
*Experimentally proved by some evil american psychologist, who did elocution lessons for orphans, She only criticized one set, and only praised the other. Guess which set consistently started stammering. Parents beware.

you could be right Tim. i saw a psychotherapist today for the first time and i don't remember jiggling up my words at all. maybe it's because i know she will listen to whatever i say and won't criticise me.

I can write brilliantly but often get confused when talking. I'll use words that are totally alien to how I perceive myself speaking but that do get the message across. Sometimes I'll stutter or hesitate a bit, usually when tired. The anxiety thing may well be true. Being a manager I worry about how I'll be perceived as I always imagine people expect me to know everything. This seems to get in the way and, as a result, I frequently have moments when the knowledge I actually have passes through the bollocks filter on its way to my mouth making me look, quite frankly, like an arse

my mums boyfriend comments a lot on how i'll randomly add in a "big word" out of nowhere. i say it's because i have a good vocabulary but he says "but people that have a good vocabulary use words like that all the time, not just on the odd occasion". he jokes that i look in a dictionary at the beginning of the day and say to myself "right, i've got to use that word in a sentence today" i do have a good vocabulary, i just don't always use it because a lot of the time it's hard to get out what i want to say or i just can't be bothered.

I sometimes cant get my words out or I get them the wrong way around, or just get stuck n forget a word. I feel like my brain is fading away though and dont realise until my gf points out what I have said. Or I go to say a word and it comes out wrong, I know I do it off the meds, think I do on them too.

I get this too. I sometimes hesitate on a sentence involuntarily and the harder I try to get it out (in the space of a few seconds) I feel like I'm going to throw-up. It's like a mega stress for a few seconds, then it's gone. I can't remember if this happened which on Concerta, but I'll let you all know soon!

I do this, sometimes worse than other times. Friends have told me that I'll cut off mid sentence sometimes and they get a sense there's a lot going on in my head. This boy is a perfect example!

what a nice vid, what a nice lad eh the stopping mid sentence is definitely something i relate to, i posted in the lounge once about trailing off mid sentence, which is what you are describing i think. my kids mention it, my DD especially will sort of look at me as if to say.... uhu.... and? and she also actually asks what was i going to say, thats when she doesnt finish my sentence for me ;D at work was a prime example when a new-ish person asked me something and i trailed off mid sentence and he waited for a moment and then asked my colleague...... does she always do that...... just stop half way and not actually finish the sentence? i knew i did it, but because people never really said i did it, i didn't quite realise how others saw it from their perspective, cos i had always done it, so i was kind of so used to it, i didnt realise just how prevalent it was.... if that makes sense

It still happens to me while taking Concerta! I can understand why I get my words jumbled-up or why it's hard for me to find the right words sometimes, but I don't understand why I get so anxious I feel sick instantly. Any thoughts?

Yes, Twitch, it happens with people I have just met, my friends/ girlfriend, etc. It's usually worse if I'm excited about a topic I'm talking about, or if I feel very strongly about a point I'm raising. I think it happens because what I'm trying to say tries to come out in one massive lump, so I have to take a moment, collect my thoughts, then proceed. It's pretty much the same thing you said about having to restructure sentences before they come out, in order for them to make sense. I very often don't remember what I've said, either. It's slightly better on meds, (Concerta XL) but not drastically improved. I think I'm just a little better at constructing arguments/ point-of-view, etc, while medicated.

Hadn't really thought about it, but I guess I'm a little stutterish without my meds.
