I am going through a period of crisis at work. I have been working mainly on one software product for a very long time and this is winding down. I am trying to skill myself up for other roles but am getting frustrated. Having been stuck mainly in one role for 20 years I am now worried about getting stuck in another role.... (or another one that folds up).
One specific thing I am grappling with. I took on another "side role" about 3 years ago. Went fine for a time but I have had a lot of problems. I haven't been doing it effectively for last year and a half. Half of me wants to give it up, half feels this is failure. I feel people are try to squeeze me out. If I give it up (or morph it to part of the role) I would rather be bought in and feel I have chosen this rather than been squeezed out.
I find it very easy to take new things on and harder to keep things going. The astute reader might notice evidence of this on these forums!
I can explain more in chat tonight.
