Yesterday A Mic Stand pinched the soft part of my Index Finger took a chunk out OUCH well due to being a Musician I was worried as its my Chord hand so I went to the local Walk in to see a Nurse. During the process she asked about regular Medications and The ADHD story came up!! Interestingly she was aware of Adults roaming around Undiagnosed and proceeded to tell me about one of the Drs who is ADHD but doesn't take any Meds she explained that he has a COFFEE to calm him down? Apparently whilst coffee is a Stimulant to non ADHDers to US it is supposed to CALM us?? Just wondered if any one has come across this before x

Yep, I thought it was a well known (unofficial) test to see if someone is likely to have ADHD or not. I used to drink coffee before bed before I knew I had ADHD. I could never understand how people needed a drink of coffee to wake them up in the morning - It just made me feel like having a nap again Too much coffee though gives me the jitters. John

Yup - stimulants calm ADHDers.
It's known as a 'paradoxical' treatment.
It works because we are low on certain neurotransmitters - to be anywhere near normal we need to have them boosted (stimulated) and in our normal state find life to be stressful/difficult since we're simply not equipped to cope.

If only it was that simple! (we'd just drink tea and coffee instead of all the palaver we go through)
But stimulation is the general principal of treatment - self medication will involve some form of stimulation (and can include adrenalin or hyperactive movement).

I need so much coffee to get me focused at work, but the problem is then that I'm wired at 1am when I should be sleeping, even if I haven't had any since 11am.

Years ago I was visiting a hippy type encampment in Cornwall. They were friends of a friend. Anyway they had this amphetamine called sulphate. Everyone snorted it and started jabbering away like nutters, I did a line or two and started dropping off. I haven't tried it again because it didn't work for me. I realise why now. I can't say that coke has had the same effect from the few times I've tried it though

I had a break from Diet Pepsi - I was drinking straight from cans and getting paranoid about my teeth. I started again last night, this time in glasses with a straw to stop me worrying, and suddenly I'm far more "together" again. Before I knew I had ADHD, I used to believe caffeine did nothing to me because all I saw was other people getting quite hyped up after coffee or too many fizzy drinks. Now I realise that it was just "normalising" me I just wish I liked coffee, far better for my teeth I'd imagine!

I've always noticed the same thing with coffee. Everyone always talked about how it would get you hyperactive and extra talkative, but I never experienced that in the slightest, even as a teenager having gallons of coffee between lessons. I never understood why it affected everyone else so much.
It's not ideal as a med though - it's way more addictive than "clean" stimulants, causes nasty withdrawal symptoms, and I think it's a worse diuretic and laxative too.
It also doesn't seem to work as precisely on the right parts of my brain as Ritalin does.

Well, well. This is all very interesting. I've only had Red Bull twice in my life and both times I fell asleep within about 5 minutes of me necking the can! Likewise, I drink espresso and never understand why my mrs, parents, and friends etc seem to go on at me and say that I shouldn't drink it beyond 8pm! It never seems to keep me awake at all.

It took me a while to understand my relationship with coffee. I drink it all day and barely notice anything, (I do think it helps me focus a little) and then come 1 am I am wide awake. I now think this is the rebound as the coffee wears off!
