I wanted to post the letter that I have written to my gp. She has agreed to refer my daughter but not myself, go figure?! I couldn't get out what I wanted to say at the appt as I was distracted and just went blank (which she couldn't see was typical of adhd!) Anyway its here and hopefully i've edited out any names etc but still left in the finer details! Hope some peeps can relate to it, give me advice reassure me as im not in a great place atm- selfish I know! Thanks, Lottie Attachments:

Great letter, Lottie - well laid out and with good evidence to back up your statements! I can relate to the 'late developer' concerns in adolescence (as well as many of the other things you've said). It makes a very compelling case for referral - hopefully other members who've hit a stumbling block like this will advise on how to go forward.
Best Daisy x

Awww thankyou, you know I was even nervous about reading replies on here but there is no need. My family don't believe that there is a problem yet constantly seem to criticise me for my forgetfullness and 'ditsy' nature on the next breath! I am full of self doubt but using info from this forum inspired me to write it all down. I have sent it today first class so hopefully it will get taken seriously!
All the best,
Lottie x

Loads of us go through the 'I'm just deluding myself/a lazy fraud' thing. That's why support groups/the forum are so...supportive

Thanks, it has done the trick too! The GP called me and said that the letter was really interesting and useful in helping her to make a referral to the Bristol ADHD clinic ;-) x

That's great news.
I just read your letter. It would have been difficult for your GP to refuse a referral, given how well written, and how much detail you put into it. I relate to almost all of it.

Bit of an update:
I have had numerous phone calls from my GP throughout the process of applying for referral. She has been great in keeping me updated and putting my mind at rest. The most recent call was to confirm that the panel who decide the outcome for out of area referral have accepted and I will be referred to the adult adhd clinic immediately. She had no idea of the waiting time and I had read online through old forum posts that there had been waiting lists of up to a year!
Anyway, I waited a week and in true adhd style decided it would 'do my head in' to wait and not have a 'goal' to be working towards! So I called them. They have received my referral and the wait is 2-3 months. They are sending out a new patient pack Nov/Dec time and I should have an appt Between Dec/Jan :-)
So happy, I am hoping this time will fly with Christmas coming up and lots to keep me busy and hopefully i'll be ready for a new start in Jan! :-)

Well, the appointment came eventually. There was a bit more than the 2-3 month wait that they originally said and it was more like 7-8 months. However we got there eventually and I got my diagnosis of ADHD- CT on Thursday 25th April. I am feeling really positive about the dx and have started my medication today. I have been prescribed Equasym XL with a starting dose of 10 mg. I can double this in a few weeks when I have gotten used to them. I believe that this is a slower release than Concerta XL and a lower starting dose? This is because I show many autistic traits including anxiety and autistic individuals tend to be more sensitive to meds.
I will try and post regularly how I am feeling on my meds (like a diary) so that I can look back and see the difference.
Already today I am thinking a lot clearer and methodically than usual. I didn't expect to feel any different especially this soon after taking the first dose!

Aww so pleased for you Lottie that's great news !!! Ill be interested in hearing how you get on with your meds I'm possibly going to start them next month myself as concerta was a bit iffy for me and maybe due to Aspie Traits?? As you mention ppl with Autism react differently very interesting!!!
So pleased for you & hope your daughter is doing well too xx

Didn't you have to have an ECG/Blood tests etc?
I got my diagnosis last week but have to week a few weeks for some tests to be run before they'll start me on meds.

Thanks I think they put a lot of Aspie/adhd ers on Equasym so hope it works for you too. I didn't have to do a blood test or ECG, they just asked for family and medical history. Day One: Felt really different and slower thinking but no other symptoms/ side effects Day Two: Much less affected by sensory stimuli and more tolerant of the kids etc. Day Three: A bit jittery, spaced but calm and thinking clearly. Limited patience, lacking energy. (It is also my time of the month so unsure if this has something to do with it?) My husband is acting quite strange towards me, I am unsure why or if its because he has noticed a difference I will ask him tonight. He did say I seem a lot calmer and mentioned I was how I was when I used to get stoned just not as giggly!! lol

I didn't need an ECG or anything either. Maybe they're more concerned about that sort of thing if you're older or if the Drs treating you are a little more jumpy about these meds?

. He did say I seem a lot calmer and mentioned I was how I was when I used to get stoned just not as giggly!! lol Do you know that's exactly the kind of reaction to meds I'm hoping for - I always felt a lot more *me* when I was a _little_ bit stoned. Too much and I'm jabbering for hours, too often I become too dopey and have lots of mood swings.

I think it might have had more to do with family history - had an uncle who had a heart bypass a few years back and my older brother has a heart condition (tachycardia or something) so I guess they're just being careful. I just wondered if it was done as a matter of course or just if you have a family history.

Ah yes, I think they would be more vigilant with family history of heart problems. Although we did tell them that my Grandads family are prone to a rare heart disorder and my brother has had to have a stent put into one of his main arteries to widen it as it was so restricted he could have died if he exerted himself. So I dunno. They just took my blood pressure and that was it!
