Just had a revelation. In my old house I had an electric oven and hob and often got told off for leaving the oven on or the hob ring. Plus I would be driving down the road and suddenly worry that I had no recollection of switching it off. In my new house there is a modern cooker with a gas hob, which I always switch off and the oven only works on a timer so always switched off when finished. I am so much more relaxed. Little things and all that ;D

My iron has an automatic cut off feature and I know that if the lid on the cooker is down that's all safe... so have not had to keep turning around to drive back home to check. Tho not as much a fire hazard the new extractor over the cooker is so quiet even on full mode... that it often gets overlooked. But at least I don't find myself getting narky cos of the racket (like the last one created.. it would make me tetchy.)

Hello, I'm the opposite with cookers... I've had an electric one for yrs now cos I nearly burned the house down several times with the gas one! Now I just switch it off at the wall! Unfortunately, I can't say the same got my iron ... Need to get one on a timer lol

I love my hot drink maker because I always used to forget I had put the kettle on. I also like the grill and oven in my microwave because they are on a timer.

Just come back from my hols, staying with a friend who has a halogen hob. I decided that it would be a good wheeze to leave the tea towel on a newly-turned off ring to dry - why waste all that heat, right?
My mate has a whistling kettle, which heats on the hob. So when I offered to make a round of tea, I thought I'd leave the towel where it was and put the kettle on a different ring. I remember thinking I'd better make sure and switch the right ring on! Durr!
Yup - burned through four layers of teatowel and set off the smoke alarms all over the house. And the bloody kettle never boiled!!!

I hate gas cookers! I've never left one on, but other people often do and I've been in several situations where we all might have died because of other idiots! Now that I have an electric hob, the worst anyone can do is leave it on - I'd rather pay a higher bill one month than die in an explosion or by gassing! But personally, I don't leave anything switched on. I have little checking routines that I do almost on autopilot, so the longest anything'd be on for would be until I left the room.
