Hi All, I have done it... I have told other employees and it has opened up pandoras box!!
On top of having a going through the grieving process by myself. I have made some really stupid mistakes, which are large enough to cause ruptions through the company. I made them because I am struggling to come to grips with understanding who I am.
I had a 'chat' with my manager and the personnel director. They want to know how to support me. Which is awesomem, but the problem is I dont know how to support myself!!! I am only just able to tell people without falling apart!!
Nothing has changed, but my world feels as though it has turned up side down. They have asked a few questions and I tried my hardest and best to answer them in a way that makes sense.
I feel as though it is the most stupidest thing ever and am trying to stay positive to drive the enthusiasm to educate people about ADHD. The more people know the more they will feel comfortable with how I work.
Next stop is to tell the directors I directly work for and this can one of two ways. Hold on tight as this is going to get bumpy!!
Has anyone else come across employers that want to know how to support you and how did it end up? Has anyone told their employers duuring the 'grieving' period? Did the relationship between you and employer change drastically? As an employee am I protected from dissmissal, as I am petrified?
Answers on a postcard and wish me luck.

Good luck but no advice. My last job ended with me, failing to explain why I work a busy busy 60/70hr week without being able to remember or justify where my time went. 2.5years later after a diagnosis, I kind of know! There is some info here, www.adders.org/info118.htm

I got lip-service about support, then things like 'needs to improve her organisation and delivery, which she says are issues caused by her ADHD' written into my performance review.

Well done for having the courage to tell them.
I have not been an employee for a long time, so cannot give you any personal anacdotes, sorry. As others have said in previous threads, your employers cannot dismiss you for having a disability.

I was told I lied on the application and to quit with a reference or face disciplinary and be fired without. Another job I admitted I had issues and they promptly started a 'tab' to get me out.

Well done.
I didn't have a grieving period when I found out after a radio 4 programme last March.. more a relief really. In my last job I was misdiagnosed with recurrent depression unfortunately and now I'm self-employed.
I think the best thing to do now is point them to websites with info on ADHD. They are obliged to make 'reasonable adjustments' they have to come up with them not you but it would help you if you helped them. So things like minimising the routine in your job and emphasising the stimulation and variety would be adjustments. Less admin and more doing. It would also help if you told them whether you were diagnosed with inattentive, impulsive or combined type. I've done a lot of work in disability discrimination in the past so ask if you get jittery.
Who diagnosed you, out of interest?

I was diagnosed with both inattentive and impulsive.

I wish people at my work were approachable enough to tell. I think what you did was brave and i totally respect you for it.
I wish i could sit them down and explain why i get upset and why i am the way i am.
I work for an OH provider and the only time ADD/ADHD is an issue is offshore and other safety critical roles. Support is growing and its people like you who make a difference :-)
I really hope it all works out for you.

Live chat used to be VERY silly on Fridays. And rude.
Shame that it kind of fizzled out really. It was a good release. (insert smutty comment here)
