I have been to see my phscitrist this morning, I told him feeling no effects of duoxitine for my depression or adhd. He told me I can start on ADHD tablets in 6 weeks time. BUT... I cant go and see the ADHD specilist becasue I was not diognosed as a child... Now I never had any tests as a child apart from my dyslexia but surly if you have had the help all your life through medication, councilling etc you at least know where you stand and you have a better understanding of how to deal with it etc? I have had it all my life I have been told, was diagnosed a few months ago at the age of 23 yet I cant see the specilist because no one picked up on it when I was a child? This seems bonkers surly I need to see a specilist more than someone who has had the help all there life??? I am based in South Wales, Nr Barry, and now i dont have a clue where to turn or what to do. Has anyone been told the same or is this just down to nhs cuts in the area maybe?

hi iam new , i am also in wales (north wales) but i have been on antidepressants for 15 years , docs just inceasing dose. waiting for pyscotherpy now. but i dont feel depressed . do not know who to turn to but im positive im on the wrong waiting list and can only see my problems in a new light as my son has adhd and im researching more and more and its coming more and more clear to me. Back then there was never adhd or not recognised so it wouldnt have been diagnosed . to me ive always been able to fit in but just felt odd. expelled from schools ect . now if was in this day and age the educational pyscologist would have been brought in at infants when i was first expelled , but it was left... We are in such tough times, lack of funding now, cutbacks everywere. Also having to constantly fight with proffesionals and it all comes down to the same thing MONEY ! .. So your able to take the drugs in 6 weeks time but on the next breath say you cant see a specialist. its so fustrating . I m just hoping they will take me seriously .

Your right it is very frustrating, I have a young baby (8 months) and need to keep my job but I find even reading a page of work very hard and don't really realise by the time I have got to the bottom have taken hardly any of it in, and need to read again and again. I need to get the help to take myself and my family forward I want the help and then I want to help people who like me have adhd. Its no win situation, I want the best for me and my family and that means getting the right help which im not. Why is adult adhd so over looked? I have missed out on the help the last 15-20 years and I cant have it now eaither. I dont know what to do next really. I am at risk of losing it all, my job and possibley my family. Its driving me mad . Is there more help in England? Or is it the same situation anyone know?

That makes no sense at all. You don't have to have been diagnosed as ADHD as a child to be diagnosed as an adult. If you were diagnosed as a child you wouldn't need to be diagnosed as an adult! That's absurd. I thought that Adult ADHD can be assessed by a Psyc but needed to be diagnosed by an ADHD Specialist. If you've not been diagnosed by a specialist, why is he prescribing ADHD meds ??

This is the situation I am in.
I have never been formally diagnosed. It was cheaper (I assume) for the local psychiatrist to assess me informally, "diagnose" ADHD, and prescribe the medication for it. I think the excuse that you were not diagnosed as a child is almost laughable (if it wasn't so serious) On the positive side, you are getting meds. This may improve your ADHD symptoms to a degree where you do not need any other therapy. It can be a shock to the system though, to be able to do things that you have struggled with for all this time, and I hope that your local psychiatrist will keep on seeing you, to help you through this transitional phase.

but I find even reading a page of work very hard and don't really realise by the time I have got to the bottom have taken hardly any of it in, and need to read again and again. i hear where you are coming from, its uber frustrating. b4 i was aware of adhd, i remember being in one job, where we would have these conference meetings, and everyone else seemed to be able to take all the hand out literature and read through and understand. i felt stupid because i could not do the same, and would usually digest the material in the taxi to the airport, or on the plane home, reading several times before it would even come close to sinking in....... i now understand why, but at the time it just felt like i was thick and incapable of doing this seemingly simple task...... being aware that this is not just a case of "not being capable" made a huge difference to me in the earlier days, i cut myself some slack realising that this was my brain just not being co-operative, it was a big step forward i think self-awareness can actually take us forward and can really be a stepping stone to getting ourselves heading in the right (or at least a better) direction. I learned more before my dx and started helping myself wth strategies for things that i had just kind of resigned myself to a lifetime of, things that i realised i could help myself with, know that i had a reason, and an understanding of why these things were causing me difficulties and not just trying to pretend they werent a problem, because everyone else seemed to manage it all ok! that said, i think it is mad not having access to a specialist because you werent dx as a child, a dx is a dx right?! out of interest, who dx you?

I saw Dr Metters in Bridgend Mental Health first, he came to the conclusion that is was either, Bi-polor, something personality disorder, or what he suspected Adult adhd. I then had to go back in with my partner where he said he was sure of it but wanted to see my parents too, after a long wait we had the letter to go in, a different doctor this time, (not sure of his name) he spoke to my mum my partner and me and again said its adult adhd. Put me on Duloxitine anti depressents as i have had alot go on the last year but also read up the despression could be that my self asteem is very low as a result of adhd and not having the right medication as a child etc.
I went back this week where he was disorginsed i had to go through the same stuff again which really annyoed me and then he said as you wernt dx as a child you cant go and see the adhd specilist?? He said he would start adhd tablets in 6-8 weeks time when I next see him.
I have my GP on Monday, would it be wise to ask to be transferd to Cardiff Mental health as only 20 min from where I live? Do they have a ADHD specilist there?
My life has started to make sence now and that has helped in some ways but I am still like a hyper active 6 year old sometimes then extremally low other times. I love books but cant read them, i lose track after the first few words, i get to the end of the page and my partner said you read that quick what happend, I dont have a clue what happend, its so so frustrating as most of you will know. Its just knowing what step to take next now??

Personally, I would wait for the meds and see how you feel when settled on them.
For what it's worth, I can relate to reading a page of text, then having to re-read it several times. Meds help (me) considerably with this.

Ye I will do that thanks, it just seems to take a while and the fustration of having it all my life without help i just want to get the right help asap. Is anyone on here from the Cardiff area who could help more? I noticed there isnt a group here or much down here to do with adhd at all. I would love to change that in the future as its a big city it should have the facilities

Hi I have ADD, and its because the adhd clinic is being shut down and everyone is being put back under general psych again, yes its to do with the cut backs, I know this as I am attending the clinic and have been told this, its a matter of months now... there is no specialist anymore here in wales, the only one I knew a DR BRIDGET CRADDOCK isn't doing it anymore,
its not just happening here services all over UK as well, seems adults with adhd are going to be put back on the back burner again!
