Hello
I am finding extremely difficult to get referred as an adult. My doctor referred me for CBT but they refused to see me as I am bipolar. I have had extreme concentration problems my whole life and had a breakdown in my late teens due to the pressure to try and do well with school but being completely unable to study, plan, organise and even holding my concentration to conversations. I am seeing the doctor again this week and while CBT may help with some aspects it is not going to change a severe concentration problem I have had my whole life. I eventually did a degree and did well but felt I still massively under achieved because of my inability to sit and study for any length. It seems really hard to get diagnosed as an adult.
I want to study in the evenings now but am dreading this as it takes me so long with my concentration.
A lot of the medications are problematic with bipolar but with the severity of this I still want to try. Has anyone been treated with this disorder with bipolar? Has ADHD medication made a lot of difference to you as an adult.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Paul

Hey I have type 1 Bipolar affective disorder...and ADHD I take Lithium for one and methylphenidate(of varying types) for the other. Both make a difference, despite not being "quite there" with the ADHD meds.(still seeking the right dose...nearly there ) I worried about mixing the meds with the two conditions, but for me it worked out ok...hopefully it'll work out ok for you as well. A. p.s.you have a degree? That's awsome, well done! I have started and quit 4 degree courses, all before the first 6 months had passed.

Thank you very much for your reply. It is nice knowing there are others out there that are treated with both as most of the meds say they are not suitable for bipolar. I still need to try and get referred again but it does seem a nightmare as an adult. I did try and see people in school but the staff there said it was pobably motivation but I knew I was not choosing to pace around when I needed to study and did want to study. Not surev how I got through the degree but I always felt I was massively under achieving where I could not focus. Good luck if you try again if the treatment works Thanks again Paul
