I wonder if anyone here can relate.
Ever since I was a kid I've long had problems with motivating myself to start new things or procrastinating and putting things off. Now that I've been officially diagnosed I'm wondering if this could be linked to the ADHD?
Have you found motivation or procrastination to be a problem? Is there a link between ADHD?

Have you found motivation or procrastination to be a problem?... Is there a link between ADHD? Definitely...and definitely!

As grim said: Absolutely!
Read up on executive function or a good book on ADHD such as Thomas E Brown's "Attention deficit disorder: the unfocused mind in children and adults" and you shall realise attention and motivation are very much linked.

Thomas E Brown is a TOP man - if you can manage to read non fiction then he's really useful.

Agreed about Tomas Brown, of everything that I've read about ADHD, his descriptions are the best.

Agree on both counts and I'll throw concentration in as the third. Hate the way I am.

I thought excessive function was an autism trait. I'll make a point to read up on it and look into the book.

if its something i want to do it takes me on average between 2 and 5 years to get around to it I always feel quite silly when I try to explain that to people. It is good to know I am not the only one.

Thomas E Brown is a TOP man - if you can manage to read non fiction then he's really useful. I’d not heard of that book so looked it up, saw it was unabridged on Audible, so was going to download it. But after being caught out before I listened to a sample. Why do they have some monotone guy who sounds like Stephen Hawkings' voice machine reading a book about a subject that people who can’t focus at the best of times would listen to? Painful. That article above was excellent, I thought I was the only person to feel that way to that extent.

do we often procrastinate at the thought and fear of failure? i don't go for something until i'v researched the tits off of it and i know exactly what im doing, like starting automotive painting and painting my cars bumpers.

Michael, really sorry to hear you hate the way you are. I can totally relate! Once you find your strategies life does get better - I promise!
Bibbles - yes totally! Although with me I can often throw caution to the wind "gahhh it'll be fine!" (As I go for a walk in the N Yorks Moors, on my own, on a Sunday (using bus to get there and back...), with no proper map (small section of OS printed from web as couldn't find my proper one in my bomb site of my uni room) bus or train timetable and no spare phone battery or torches. I did get home that night you'll be impressed to know!)
In group activities, if I'm not in charge/have an important role I don't pay attention and so when things go wrong I am worse than useless because I try to learn everything then and so slow Dow. the whole process!
This is different when I'm somehow involved with helping of other people though. The friend/customer/patient is the most important and I must not mess up if there's anything I can do about it.
But weirdly with Pokemon the Nintendo games I have to know which strategy I'm going to use before I start. Then I spend way too much time playing/researching it meaning everything else in life goes to pot (including getting RSI) and then I stop playing and forget everything I was wanting to do when I allow myself back to it. Same goes with hacking technology. I can spend days on the internet living only by tea and cereal.

Same here, procrastinator extraordinaire. Motivationless too. Unless it is not important and then I'm on it right away.

The article on page 1 is exactly where I am at and have always been. I have procrastinated on so much( everything) for so long, deep fear has set in followed by almost complete incapacity.
I know exactly what I should do, exactly how to do it. I can't do it.
I have lived my whole life this way, and it was only in January that a name was put to it, which I would say has probably been the biggest relief in my life to date.
I just sincerely hope, now the problem is named, I can find ways to overcome it. I am both hopeful and scared at this prospect. I am not sure if I am somebody beyond help.

Petra I think I can speak on behalf of everybody when I say we haven't given up on you, so don't give up on yourself, your still part way through your journey tackling your problems, your not at the end yet. Plenty of hope left!
