Hello people.
Just wondering about possible effects of refined sugar on ADHD, I change my mind so much I don't know if it is effecting me as much as I thought it was. What are you thoughts on this?
I seem to crave sugar.
Coffee im sure relaxes me, if I drink too much I slur my speech, not sure of negative effects.
just looking peoples thoughts on this, i keep experimenting , then forgetting and changing my mind then trying again.

Hi Bigal
I can't remember where, but I read somewhere recently that ADHD brains burn more glucose. Not so much on meds. so that might have something to do with it. If I remember where i read it I'll stick up a link.

I've given up sugar in my tea etc for approx 3-4 years.
General health benefits are probably numerous. Effects on my concentration/procrastination levels? No tangible improvement.

I got the feeling that adding sugar to everything would help at the cost of... adding sugar to everything ;/ I might just start adding it again, see how it goes

When i was a young adult and right up into my 20's i lived on high sugar foods, i would just keep topping up by means of chocolate bars and cakes and eat virtually no normal foods at all to keep my energy levels up.
However as i got older i could no longer manage my weight this way and so slowly had to learn to stop, what happened was i started sleeping in the afternoons and over the years some how forgot this behaviour until last Saturday... I was celebrating a good weight loss, as you do, by eating loads of cake and treated myself to a box of chocolates and some other treats and noticed that i did not need at sleep that afternoon so i was thinking that maybe my body uses the sugar and saves the fat.
For clarification i am soon to be 39 and attend slimming world each week so no sugar or fat for the next 6 days result very tired me!!

Refined sugar = bad.
Dunno about ADHD brains. There are all sorts of reasons why someone might need more/less fuel, but you should always aim for the low GI, slow-release form.
I self-medicate with sugary stuff, particularly when stressed, as I get well buzzed on it - but I just end up feeling horribly toxic.

i'm not on meds and know very little . no, actually nothing!, about biology and science but for me i find sugar in any form makes me feel jittery and anxious sometimes after the high i get from it sometimes straight away with no high. Coffee does same, both have got worse as i've got older. I have noticed talking to lots friends that experience this that my male friends don't seem to get a negative effect from coffee but don't know if its just coincidence so may not be same for all males (and they don't have adhd)

I have decided to cut way down on the sugar and up the coffee, I forgot to take my coffee to work for two days and forgot to drink a cup this morning and oh my did I have a bad day! I tried to ring my psyc, my GP my mum and I nearly quit my job, I operate heavy machinery, and to tell you the truth I should not be in a machine the way I feel. In the last week, i have burst a gas main, water pipe and a sewer pipe. I feel like a bull in a china shop.

Sola dosis facit venemum All things are poison and nothing is without poison; only the dose makes a thing not a poison Love the sugar cycle illustration planetdave Personally I have always had massive problems with sleeping. So I try to avoid messing with things that are stimulants, ever. Coffee just interferes with your sleep cycles for 24-48 hours to perpetuate its addiction. Dont get me wrong, I love e-numbers, sugar, ginko, ginseng, caffeine, theobromine -if i could live off chocolate without my teeth falling out, i surely would. Oh chocolate...... It takes me ages to come off caffeinne, too bigal. I have zero energy and am confused for ages Although, I have been up to a 12 cups and 12 bars of chocolate a day man at one point tho working 12 hour night shifts. Always taper off thats my advice Coming off nicotine is easy, if you supplement it with fruit breaks instead, but why is the whole world such an unreasonable c*nt on around day 3-5. Do they know or something?!?! I find that when I practice mindfulness, meditation, or biofeedback regularly my dopamine levels etc etc balance out on their own, it totally drops my ADD levels too, but at the mo it is really hard to keep the practice regular I dont want to be addicted to anything that isn't freely available as part of me. I carry my biofeedback unit around with me now and have been practicing all year, and can use it in the park, on the trains, busses, sat in the car. Even in meetings. Now that my practice is getting easier, I can just about meditate walking and standing, I can make good use of all sorts of occasions

There are many kinds but I am using HRV biofeedback. Thats Heart Rate Variability. I will put a proper post up about it soon coz I have been using it all year to great effect and I really hope it can help others too. I dont really wanna hijack this thread about coffee sugar and make it about HRV. Am a booze man myself anyway lol Spk soon
