First, we all have attention span issues here so tl;dr version: Anyone know of somewhere I can go for an affordable but reputable and as-official-as-it-gets set of diagnostic tests for ADHD in the UK?
Hi there all, I'm not on here a lot but we're getting to the anniversary of my coming to the site, which sort of brings me to a topic I'd really like to get sorted out:
Formal diagnosis for ADHD. I've suffered from the symptoms of ADHD and depression all my life, and an American physician friend diagnosed me last year, as well as two mental health care professionals who put me through the tests and said that they thought I had it, but after going to my GP I was passed up the chain, and before getting to a specialist I had an experience with the area psychiatrist that has genuinely scarred me, and I don't want to try that route again.
Just to be clear: all I want is a diagnosis (or not, I'm prepared to accept that I might not have it, I'm just not prepared to accept the experience I had with the area psychiatrist.) I'm not interested in meds, and if I can get a diagnosis from a real doctor who is bureaucratically allowed to treat me, then I can get some concessions at work that would really help me.
So, yeah, anyone know an affordable place where I can go for a proper private diagnosis?

Aaaaand I've just realised this would probably have been a more appropriate post for the Symptoms and Diagnosis Form. Apologies, folks.

What do you call affordable? And where can you get to? London specialists tend to be more expensive - if Yorkshire is within range then Dr Chris Taylor at Harrogate/Leeds is inexpensive. Cygnet Hospital Harrogate, 23 Ripon Road, Harrogate HG1 2JL Tel: 01423 500599 There is someone who is quite inexpensive in the southern area but I can't remember their name - they were mentioned fairly recently.

Thanks PD! I'll have think about them. I've never been up north much, but I could combine an assessment with a bit of a holiday for myself and my other half. I've also managed to find an affordable place where I can possibly get an assessment here in London. My price range is basically £300-£400, and this place seem to be £300, which is do-able so long as my next ghost hunt sells tickets!

I would hassle your gp first, then your primary care team, then the patient council & remember the Nice guide lines. Or you could go private under nhs. Just to jump the queue it will be the same doctor if you wait on the waiting list. I wouldn't go private as you are paying someone enough money they will right what ever you want at a price. Cause I did this for dyslexia, what I should if done was a multi sensory test ie everything, dyslexia, dysprixia , autism, bipolar, Adhd, anxiety, depression etc then get the psychologist to send a letter to your gp stating his findings for him to refer you on to a psycharictist cause under nhs guide lines no 72 that is who is writing the prescription, sends it to your gp then on to the chemist. Alot of people will tell you here if you have dyslexia (the easiest one to detect) you probably have some form of the rest believe it or not. Anyhow I get tested on Thursday afternoon All being well, I'm no different than anyone else here it's been a struggle an up hill one at just asking the questions but not getting the answers until I got fed up and seen an advocate. He phoned the psychiatrist had a chat which I think through some weight behind my case cause the advocate came to this meeting as well. That meeting he done a Adhd test confirmed that I had tendencies & referred me there and then on a nhs psychologist. What angers me it took a year of lip service and note taking and I already had a statement of dyslexia he simply didn't read it or consider the link. A waste of my time running to the hospital getting out of work. When ever there's cut backs to services effecting everyone. What was he gonna do palm me of at next opportunity & tell me can't do anything more for yea son all your symptoms are all anxiety? I'm nobody's fool I may have a low iq but I deserve a proper diagnosis any how I have reported the experience to patients council who are going to investigate the matter. No matter what you do don't give in fight the system cause it's there to be fought. If you left your car in to get serviced & it wasn't right you would bring it back wouldn't you why should are mental health be any different??? I find out on the 21st of May what the outcome of the investigation is. Okay that's me done for now. Sent from my GT-I9300 using proboards

Just a quick note about going out of area, I saw Dr Taylor at Leeds myself, as with other Drs, there are follow up appointments to bear in mind. If you settle straight away on meds this won't be too much of an issue, and the consultant will hopefully sign you over to GP. For me. Had to go back 3 in times to get meds right, this is important as GP's will need assurance from psych in order to PX stimulants as they are a controlled drug.
My referral for local NHS care has now come though (12 months wait) So I'm not seeing Dr Taylor now.
Good luck

Oh just saw you don't want meds! Lol Ok, maybe down the line, maybe not.
Well I can totally respect your reasons for wanting a diagnosis but All I can say is you will know far more than the psych ! I found the one I saw ok, but I defo didn't feel he had a handle on what it was all really about.
He relied on tick charts basically. I was disappointed, I'd hoped to have a big enlightening chat but we filled in charts...
So I hope you meet someone who you feel rely understands you and gives you a great assessment
Otherwise you could have A great time with that £400!
