hI TO ALL dOES ANYONE NO IF CAFFINE HAS A CALMING EFFECT WITH SOME SYMPTOMS OF ADHD/ADD? I HAVN'T HAD A DIAGNOSIS, FINDING MORE INFORMATION AND STILL LEARNING MORE ABOUT MYSELF AND MY SON. I NEVER REALLY USE TO DRINK FIZZY DRINKS UNLESS I WAS OUT TO A PUB OR RESTURANT, BUT SINCE LAST SUMMER I HAVE FOUND MYSELF BECOME ADDICTED TO DIET PEPSI, MY SYMTOMS OF ANXIETY HAVE BEEN GREATLY REDUCED, COULD IT BE THE CAFFINE? MY SON SLEEPS MUCH BETTER AT NIGHT WHEN HE HAS HAD A REALLY STRONG COFFEE? HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD ANY EXPERENCE SIMULAR OR SAME AS THIS? THANK YOU AMIE (BRAINFOG) X ;D

I self medicated with caffeine (and chocolate and carbs), and still do, but less so post-prescription-meds. Some people find they are too sensitive and so cannot have it after a certain time of day/at all.
I personally have tried to not have caffeine after 8pm as it is also a diuretic (makes you pee) and so I often wake in the middle of the night to deal with the issue (which I have to do most nights anyway). I do try to have Clippers Sleep Easy tea, which contains Valerian root which contains something that clinically does help you sleep - which I find helps but doesn't "cure".
When I was younger (8 onwards when I could get away with it!) I did used to drink tea in the evening, and I am considering trying it again.
I have taken to keeping a coffee machine on my bedside table to help waking up in the morning though. I just have to remember my mug and its sugar and milk the night before. I also keep a glass of water on my bedside table to ensure I take my morning citalopram, so it's become my bed-time routine. I just now need to find a way to ensure I brush my teeth and I'd be set!

Brainfog - Citalopram is an antidepressant that affects Serotonin in the brain.
The difference between Diet Pepsi and coffee is probably the amount of caffeine. Coffee can be very random depending on the amount and type you use. Filter Coffee has more than instant coffee for instance. Pepsi clearly has the right dosage for you.

Yea.... I kinda have a routine... Things that are very important (to me) seem to have a better chance of getting done. I really like my meds and get real issues with my mood when I don't take my citalopram for a couple of days. (It sticks around in the body for a lot longer than stimulants.) I also have a few places that I keep my Dexamphetamine, with thanks to emergency "cash stash" keyring fobs (play.com or amazon or menkind shops or similar) for when I forget to take the blister pack.
Washing up and teeth brushing certainly doesn't appear to have the same importance!

Hi.
THAT MAKES SENCE ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF CAFFINE, IT MOSTLY EFFECTS ME IF IVE BEEN OUT AND ASKED FOR DE-CAF COFFEE, THEN ITS NOT TILL I FEEL REALLY UNWELL QUICKLY AFTER I REALISE THEY HAVE GIVEN ME AN ORDINARY COFFEE (NOT GOOD)
darkknightslover;
SORRY YOU LOST ME A LITTLE ABOUT DEXAMPHETAMINE AND KEY FOBS AND BLISTER PACKS, BUT I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT IF ITS REALLY IMPORTANT OR INTERESTING YOU GET THINGS DONE.

Make sure to tell them that you are sensitive to caffeine when you order - or start drinking herbal teas My problems came from tolerance - at one point I was drinking coffee like water as self-medication for the focus effects. Not that I knew what I was doing at the time(s) of course. The more I drank, the more screwed up my circadian rhythm got.

Ahh yes, the last bad reaction i had was so extreme, though i was going to loose my mind, i was in London awaiting to watch my 1st ever show and went for coffee first, i soon realised it was not de-caff, omg. i felt like i had been druged, i was so thirsty, then the heart palpatations started and everything was swimming, i got to the show (thank god i was sitting in the dark ) because i then started to shake uncontrollably. what a state, i then had a long train journey home squashed in a carrige like a sardine with no oxegen. i was so glad id made it home alive lol!! i think from now on i will take my own coffee everywhere and just ask for hot water.
I have heard about coffee shops using high dosage, they want to give people a high so they come back again and again, but not for me, i will just stick to the diet coke, i feel safe with that, even though i dont want to be addicted to it but its much safer than alcohol or drugs!!
xx hope you all had a good day xx

Coffee has been a lifeline for me, when I forget to take it or try to reduce it, as I have just started concerta things get really bad.. like today! when I got home from work I made a cup with 5 teaspoons in it just to bring myself out of the fuzz. It takes quite large doses for me though and I don't sleep well without it. Caffeine, nicotine and concerta keeping me sane at the minute, its a pity isn't it.

Just started on 18mg 3rd day and nothing, that's why I tyres less coffee, to see if concerta had kicked in. I don't smoke, I take the mints. Just drinking a very strong coffee at the mo, before work, I can't praise it enough, I wouldn't be working without it.

Hi. darkknightslover; SORRY YOU LOST ME A LITTLE ABOUT DEXAMPHETAMINE AND KEY FOBS AND BLISTER PACKS, BUT I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT IF ITS REALLY IMPORTANT OR INTERESTING YOU GET THINGS DONE. tHANK AGAIN FOR INFO XX Dexamphetamine (often shortened to Dex) is an alternative medication to methylphenidate (Ritalin/concerta - often shortened to MPH). Blister pack is the plastic and foil container of medications inside their cardboard boxes. Cash stash keyring fob: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005FKKVPY/ref=cm_sw_r_an_am_ap_am_gb?ie=UTF8 there are others available, but I got this one (one attached to my phone replacing the keyring with pretty string, the other to my work locker key) and not had any problems yet after a few months. Like most oral medication about half an hour, peaks at 1-3 hours for short release and you should take it 4 hrs apart if you're taking 2 doses a day.
Yes with caffeine, no with nicotine. Don't smoke. Sleep problems plague ADHDers. I have problems getting to sleep, staying asleep, and waking up too early or taking a long time to become alert. Sometimes all 4 at once!
I think I mentioned earlier about taking my citalopram first thing helps? About half an hour after things become much easier.

Hi, hope today has been a good one Do you think the sleep thing is different for people who are predominantly hyper/adhd to those with predominantly add type? some days I don't stop and others I can't get on and do a thing. in an online assement I came out predominantly add with a bit of impulsive/hyper. I guess it takes a little while with meds to see what works best and have a routine.

I guess it takes a little while with meds to see what works best and have a routine. Differences? Not that I've come across. Routine is key. Try and keep a daily diary or note in your appointment diary things like what sort of things you ate, how much and how well you slept and times you take your medication. Also get a nice pen and diary - you'll want to find excuses to use them then! I like paperchase, filofax and fountain pens with unusual ink colours (Parker now do turquoise and pink!!!!!) I think there is a difference, I read that some people are more mentally active resulting in tiredness but there are people on here who know a lot more than me. I sleep a lot, less now on meds, and there are others on here the same. I'm happier cleaning at midnight than getting up early to do it I also can spend all day really busy and get loads done and then end up doing nothing for days. xx

Does this still happen on meds Well- clearly it does but I was hoping that would be one of things that would go once meds were established Does it improve at all on meds?

Sounds like everyone is different with when and the amount they sleep. I feel very tired all day every day, although I do go to the gym most morning which I cant do without as it helps fight the depression/anxiety, I couln't sleep during the day as im always too restless and got to much to do even if I get nothing done feel busy all day until it get to about 7-8pm then I am exhausted by then. I go to bed early and get up very early and can never lay in due to too much to do (restless) Im not on meds (prob mentioned before sorry)

I was hoping meds would give me some motivation too JJ but not yet, I can take my second dose of 10mg mph and fall asleep 30mins later.
Its almost like, oh, theres nothing I want to do so a kip will pass some time and then I will get on with my jobs.
My activity also seems to follow a cycle with my periods so i spend a week each month wanting to do nothing but sleep and eat, oh and snap at whoever speaks to me!!
