I have been on 18mg of concerta for 6 weeks and although I feel great I have constant stomach pain. I have read somewhere its to do with the prolong release wax coating. The pharmacist had suggested equasym as a good alternative but my doctor suggested different. My worry is now that i have the full use of my mind don't want to loose this but i would appreciate if anyone has knowledge or ideas on this confusing subject. Thank you

You could ask your doctor to switch you to Ritalin, which if you don't know is instant release methylphenidate (Concerta is extended release methylphenidate).
If you don't like the idea of having to remember to keep taking meds multiple times in a day however, you could try switching to something completely different. I'm currently on Elvanse (Vyvanse) and am absolutely loving it. It's working so much better than Concerta for me.

It's a dextroamphetamine pro-drug, which means that it's completely intert entering the body, but your digestive system converts it into d-amphetamine.
I find it a lot smoother than concerta in that there isn't really a noticeable comeup or comedown. There aren't even really any ups or downs throughout the day either.
What I absolutely love however is that it gives me the ability to focus AND motivation as well. With Concerta, I had focus, but absolutely no motivation.
It doesn't make me feel high or monged out. It just makes me feel like me, only better.

Hi Curtis thank you for your advice. Although I am enjoying the concerta I am mindful that its not the ideal medication for my problem. I am seeing my doctor soon so will approach the subject but it is difficult to relay any information with time restraints. It seems the doctors know longer have the time to fully diagnose any particular problem which when concidering my condition that at times I cannot articulate through lack of cognivitive ability makes getting the right treatment difficult.

Elvanse was only made available here a few months ago and I think it's going to become a lot more common as Dr's start prescribing it for cases where methylphenidate is not providing an ideal solution.
They've been able to prescribe dextroamphetamine for ages now, but rarely do as it has a high abuse potential, but Elvanse solves that (mostly).
It's definitely the closest we're going to get to Adderall (d-amphet is 75% of what's in adderall), which generally speaking is the best ADHD medication for most people.

Happysoul, if your current medication works well apart from the stomach issues, why would you need to change to an entirely different drug? To be honest you're far more likely to have to go down that approach anyway, especially as NICE guidelines have Dexamphetamine as the second or third line after MPH as their recommendations are on a "bang per buck" basis. The pro-format of Dex might be a bit smoother but, as it's not been around for as long, some of the rarer side effects won't be known.

...written by worn out NT spouse? I've only glanced at it though. The negative anecdotes of Adderall pale in comparison to the positive ones from what I've read but who knows. For me... Concerta = useless. All side effects, no positives. Elvanse/Lisdex = much better. No or very few sides and I feel like I can finally make some decisions but the razor sharp focus that others say they get? I'm not there yet and I envy those that are.
