Hi guys! I am considering moving to London from Austria and would love to know some more about how Adult ADHD is dealt with in the UK. Maybe someone here has done this before me or can answer some of my questions anyway 1. Does ADHD count as a 'disability'/'learning disability' (like dyslexia) or a 'mental health issue'? 2. Do I have to disclose my ADHD to potential employers when applying for jobs? 3. How can I ensure I continue to receive my medication once I've moved? I am currently taking Medikinet and Medikinet XL (called Medikinet retard here in Austria) and don't want to risk having to start an all new medication regime. 4. Is there anything else that's finicky about ADHD in the UK that I haven't covered in my questions here? Help/hints/ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi mccutcheon I'm not going to be much help, but I thought I'd post hello anyway I haven't moved here so can't talk about that... In answer to your other questions: 1) it's def covered by the disability discrimination act. I don't know if it's called a learning disability but doubt it... I dont know if its called a mental health issue - the big mental health charity 'mind' doesn't have it on their site... I think it comes under 'neurodevelopmental disorder' - like autism...but I don't know what that counts as either! 2) I don't know about disclosing to an employer - I guess you judge the costs / benefits for yourself and it depends on what the job is ... 3) that one I really don't know - it's all pot luck here. If you know where you're going in London, I'd call local doctors' surgeries and specifically ask beforehand - if necessary change your preferred place to somewhere with a sympathetic GP who's prepared to prescribe. If you find one then I'd suggest getting your psych to make contact with them beforehand - and I'd def not come here without a supply of meds to last a bit. 4) everything's finicky here!! Good luck xx

4. If you just assume everything will be an uphill struggle, with few professionals who understand/accept/care about whether or not you have ADHD, you will come close to being prepared for how totally awful the system can be here.

Hi, I moved back from Spain exactly a year ago and it has been very difficult !! Please ensure you have at least 6 months medication before you come here, also make sure you can have some sent to you as well !! GP's cannot prescribe Ritalin/adderall/Concerta etc here. They have to refer you to a Mental Health Team where you will have a psych evaluation...The Psychiatrist will discuss medication with you and then write/fax to your GP... Here in London it can be 6 months before you can get that appointment !! I was very unlucky the GP surgery I registered with were awful. They lost all the info from the Mental Health Team, despite having it faxed to them several times...It took them 5 weeks to prescribe anything, and then it was the wrong drug... Mind you they couldn't sort a repeat prescription for an antidepressant out, they messed up every single month for 6 months... Thank goodness I moved GP's and now have an amazing GP service, its just a shame that where my meds where YoYo'd so much, they arn't as effective anymore....
I was advised that when applying for jobs, you can request an interview under the disability act. I have found this very helpful to 'get a foot in the door' although I asked my Psychiatrist whether i 'needed' to disclose my ADD and said it's individual... If your meds control your issues and you don't need any special considerations or help to carry out the Job, then of course there is no need! Hope this helps Best wishes Clare x
