Good morning, I don't think this is ADHD related but curios to know who is an early bird who is a night owl? Seems to be alot of action on here late at night, but I myself am an early bird. This is because I feel my best in the morning (after a brew) By the end of the day I'm tired and over it all and ready for bed What about you

all my life was late bird -came alive at night - like a zombie in mornins - hence worked in catering industry and pubs till my daughter was born, have become a morn person in the past year - love early mornins now - world is so still - (and devoid of people ) nature is so evident - peaceful - love watching the difference as seasons change - am not sure but think this is because my posh clock (dawn/sunset simulator ) has re trained my brain - but suppose could be hormone related as well as i have always been ruled by my hormones

all my life i have been a night owl - generally an early night was being in bed by midnight and i struggled to get up in the mornings to go to work, cos i needed at least 8 hours. when i stopped smoking about 9 months ago i became an insomniac - waking after three hours and then only dozing until five or six am at the latest, and unable to get back to sleep. after a few weeks i read about someone's body clock finally kicking in after years of being stimulated by - not nicotine, strangely, but some of the other chemicals in cigarettes,. i realised that i was actually getting v tired much earlier in the evening, around 9pm, and if i pushed through that tiredness i was struggling to get to sleep at midnight - like i'd shut down my body clock. but whatever time i went to bed i was waking up around six or so and not able to sleep any more... so i started going to bed when i felt tired, early evening, and waking up at six. i found myself discovering mornings for the first time in my life - that quiet time when the world is still and there's a lot more space, and the day hasn't been cluttered or spoiled yet, and there's time to process the things of the day before and get centred for the day ahead. and suddenly i was a lark, and feeling more in touch with myself and less stressed. only now i see that it's quite a discipline to keep that as a pattern, and it can as soon as you encounter other people who don't seem to understand that someone this young/old would want go to bed that early and keep phoning at 9pm or visit don't want to leave until 11 pm.... or when you get busy and work at something into the evening, and then still find yourself waking up early in the morning but without the motivation or energy to get up... at the moment i'm aiming for those earlier evenings but struggling with the disclipline and putting boundaries around activities or impulses or people; i need some time to wind down at the end of the day as much as to get going at the beginning of the day, to find a natural rhythm.... so far, i think the early morning me, the lark, is finding a gentler way of being, and better perspective on life, the day, the universe... interesting thread

I tend to find that if I try and do anything that requires any thought or concentration after about 8pm then it just won't happen. I'm supposed to be starting to read through my books in preparation for my next OU module and I was reading one last night after I'd watched GBBO but I just wasn't taking anything in. I was seeing the words but they weren't making any sense and my mind kept wandering.
I'm usually very content and relaxed in the morning providing it's fairly quiet and if I have to do any work, I tend to prefer to do it in the morning so I guess I'm an early bird.

Night owl...even as a child sleeping 11pm - 2am was normal for me...Although as I got older I'm finding I need a bit more sleep, so now days it's 11pm bed time...although usually theres a good hour or two of racing thoughts before I can sleep :/

I find this all v interesting - so jan and c/Mary - what happens when you have a couple of days of late nights - is it hard to get back into a routine? yes - very hard to get back into a routine!! at least it is for me, for now. i have only been a morning person for a few months and only recently had a few late nights to upset my routine in the last couple of weeks, along with a period of stress and changes which required me to be busier than i would have chosen. i have been surprised to find i now feel as tho my early mornings have been "stolen" because i am too tired to get going, and so i get going at the very last possible moment, as i used to. this means i don't have time to fit in all those things i have been delighting in since the early summer - time to lie in bed and process my thoughts of the day before, getting up and making coffee, feeding the birds, doing yoga stretches and a sort of meditation and deep breathing, and being able to begin the day o so gently and feeling prepared such that i am less swept away by it. right now the start of the day all feels like a huge rush and a disorganised stressful bother, and i am running on empty and all too prone to irritability and feel myself moving backwards in overall health, energy, and those tiny glimpses of stillness, and i never catch up with myself even if i take time during the day - it's not the same. and REALLY struggling to switch off in the evenings. usually i would put it down to having had an organised week or so and then everything falling apart as usual. but it wasn't about being any more organised, and had been going on for almost five months which is a HUGE time for me. i'm hoping tonight will be the night, and i'll be zzzzzz'd off before 10.30pm - small changes in the right direction each day i reckon will get me back there, i hope soon. and tbh i could prob fall asleep now i'm so tired, but don't want to wake up at 3am! still can't believe this is me talking - i'm still the person who gets energised in the late evenings and does some of my best thinking/concentrating/work then, but i love those mornings now.... sorry - really long answer from really tired contrary person!

I think I am a bit of a mixture which I know sounds a bit strange but with working irregular shifts for the past 3 years I don't have much routine. If I have worked until 7.30 only just got home at 8pm then I tend to stay up longer to relax before going to bed but then struggle to get up in the mornings yet sometimes when I have finished at 4.30 and back for 5ish then I struggle to stay awake.
I am looking forward to having a routine eventually, would make things so much easier

Definitely a night owl! I suspect that if I didn't have to go to work I'd probably be nocturnal! On days I don't have to work I often go to bed at around 4am, so don't get up until about 12/1pm. That seems to be the way I feel most comfortable. I do love the really early mornings- like other people have mentioned; the stillness and tranquility, but I'd rather see that from the other side- ie, I've stayed awake long enough to see it, enjoy it and take it all in, and now I'm going to bed! On days when I have work, I usually go to bed around 2. And tend to lie awake, unable to switch off, having conversations/arguments with people in my head, or with the broken record playing just a few lines at a time, or the burning need to know RIGHT NOW how to grow Pansies, because I really like Pansies and the ones I planted haven't done *anything* so what did I do wrong?.. And I always find it way too hard to get up.

I can be both. Depending if there is something I actually want to do or something I'm avoiding. Trying to avoid being both at the same or neither.
