.....I'm sure this will have been discussed before.... but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on possibilities? Barkley's suggested Intention Deficit Disorder is a complete non-starter in my opinion.....we don't have lack of intention....I have overload of intention, more like........we have lack of execution.... .....hence.....Thomas E Brown, Barkley and others.....EFDD...Executive Function Deficit Disorder....but if you look up the phrase it is medically described as mild cognitive impairment, (putting aside for the moment these aforementioned experts' 'expert' description) ......and whilst it no doubt is 'mild ER' compared to say severe dementia, brain tumour/trauma etc, I still don't think this will enable your average Joe Public to grasp the full extent, severity and all-invasive nature and therefore how debilitating this disability is

Don't you think we'll just be seen as unable to control ourselves, but we could if we just tried harder or willed it....as opposed to the reality of being hard wired with inconsistent unconscious regulation

The term 'Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder' really does my head in.. Ever since I started to get a real understanding of what it actually means, I've felt it's just wrong! I think it makes people think we're just silly children who don't WANT to sit still and listen. (Seriously, this might end up being a whole separate rant lol, it makes me VERY angry!) I am yet to come up with something I think would sum it up correctly though.. Attention Overload Disorder, perhaps?

Exactly. me too ....makes me so..... and I think that's one of the reasons we've all had soooo much to say on JJ's thread....."yes, but everyone does that".....because the very name forces us to defend ourselves ....that and all the baggage that goes with it in the media.....I'm realistic enough to know that a new name alone won't wipe all this away, but it'll be a damn good start....

Mmm.... still think it needs to sound more meaty.... and.....completely different to the current name..... it needs a new identity

Although 'overload' is pertinent it doesn't cover hyper focus - that being an inability to control attention. That's why I support the Attention Dysregulation Disorder moniker - be it meaty or vegetarian.

I like dysregulation.....and I like executive function.....I just want an 'extra' something to reflect that it is not mild....
Not keen on the attention.....for the very reason that it doesn't capture what you mentioned...executive function and mood
it's interesting because if you look up executive function disorder resulting from brain injury.....there is recognition that rehabilitation is needed/takes time/is hard.....and they have a ball park to go back to.....we have no idea

AMOS - Attention and Mood Overload Syndrome I always get quite disgruntled at so many other " disorders" being called syndromes, whilst ADHD (and other apparently "mood related" disorders get labelled as ..ummm, yeah...... disorders!?) sorry! maybe this is just a personal "disgruntle"

Yeah, I was joking about renaming it Attention Overload Disorder. I know that's not a very description.
I haven't come up with something I would like to call it instead of ADHD.

Ugh. Getting ahead of myself again! I meant to say: I know it's not a very GOOD description.

.....I just want an 'extra' something to reflect that it is not mild.... If you want something to sound "extra" all you have to do is prefix it with extreme,or end it with "to the max". On a vaguely serious note, some reference to "stimulus overload dysphoria" and "organisational function failure" ...plus,you'd get a great acronym to shout at nt's who ask what's wrong! (Disclaimer: i only said vaguely serious!)

In time they'll find out the cause(s) of ADHD and other conditions and we might find that there are a number of New conditions that totally replace them. This might include or explain why different people react differently to different medications. E.g. Diabetes types. One is not enough insulin produced, the other it's not enough response is made to the insulin that is produced (which is why it is possible to have both types).
We might find ADHDers have something similar with regards to noradrenaline, dopamine, Seratonin and perhaps others on top of architectural differences.

Sent from my C6603 using proboards I think you're right that there is definitely more to this that we don't know yet and that more specific diagnoses will be made that better suit different sub-types for all kinds of disorders. Can you imagine the media frenzy when the DSMs increase in size and complexity yet again, though? It's a good job we have digitalised information now, otherwise psychs would have to start carrying their manuals round in wheel barrows. A utopian/distopian (depending on your viewpoint) future could have a discrete diagnosis for every individual with the appropriate meds to go with it. And, if you take that to its extreme, if everybody is seen to have something that can be 'improved' artificially then everyone is disabled, and if everyone is, then no one is.

I've been thinking about this for some time. I think it should be simply termed by an initial umbrella diagnosis of "Executive Function Disorder" and applying the various caveats of inattention, SCT etc UNTIL REAL f*****g research is done that can get to grips with what's happening between various physical sections of the brain. You never know, one day we might be able to convince the pedlars of stories (i.e. the tabloids), that people are born with a disability and deserve help not ridicule and abandonment. And Kathymel when you say, "if everybody is seen to have something that can be 'improved' artificially then everyone is disabled, and if everyone is, then no one is. ", this is EXACTLY how I see this. Is this so beyond us that the views of the real nut jobs, i.e. the moguls and heads of corporations who stand and judge the mentality ill via their media broadcasts, exaggerations and lies, can't be swept aside for the love of humanity? This isn't just about ADHD in the end, it'll help us understand psycopathy, sociopathy, schizophrenia, various forms of autism and OCD, etc etc. But I'm seriously beginning to wonder if the powers in charge of all of us really ever want a cure for everything - including mental health. I see evidence all around me that potential help re meaningful diagnosis into things like ADHD is simply being attenuated in favour of some other ideal that often involves politicians keeping their jobs by pandering to social reactionaries.

It's in the interests of the powers-that-be to keep everyone else as disempowered as possible. Tell me about it. No coincidence then that visionary authors, social commentators and philosophers have been writing about it for decades - even if in code form. Ismail Kadare's "The Successor" tells it in creepy terms. We think we've moved on as a species, but the reality tells us otherwise. I'm hoping aliens will land and sort us out. Either by putting us out of our misery quickly, or by giving everyone cure-all full frontal lobotomies - in a sort of compassionate "The Day the Earth Stood Still" stylee PS - I prefer the 1951 version - including all the plank acting as opposed to the major plank acting of one K Reeves
