3 years ago I didn't (knowingly) know any ADHDers.....during those 3 years, however, I have met lots, through this site and support groups....and, like most of us, read lots of books and articles written by our fellow ADDers, and about them....and it very quickly becomes apparent that we inherently have a very good sense of humour.....often cheeky....often sharp....often self -deprecating..... and think of Jim Carey, Robin Williams, Robbie Williams, Will Smith, Whooping Goldberg... yet, also, many of us, like me, admit to often being a bit slow off the mark when it comes to 'getting' the joke...I find this really interesting.....and wonder why this is.....in so many other contexts I am thought to be quite sharp (honest) ...yet it took me aaaaages before the penny dropped over the shout box conversation as to how to get the little pink or blue symbol next to your avatar.....and grim's ..."revealing my gender has got me in trouble in the past"......as did contrarymary.....in fact, I'm not convinced I would ever have got it, had the following posts not highlighted the humour in it... ......(thank you petra for your helpful contribution ) similar thing happened last night....although this time it only took 2 hours before I got it.... I got a text from one of my best friends saying "I'm looking into my family tree to see what else is in there"..... I sort of thought 'huh?' To myself but carried on with what I was immersed in.... 2 hours later I remembered that my earlier text to her was "I preferred it at 1 - v - nil....it gave me false hope..."

I know the the feeling.
I can make a roomful of people laugh and yet often struggle to follow anything but the most obvious humour in conversation.

I know the feeling exactly I think it's obviously because we're not focusing our minds, were thinking about a lot iof things at once and were not even aware of the cognitive processes going on so it takes it that wee but longer to get absorb this and being distractible but once it gets absorbed and we fully understand we're like no other,
I used to be really funny in high school i had a really whacky sense if humor and just a care free attitudei remember making everyone laugh as well as my family we'll my parents didn't but my siblings did, things are different now had to grow up at some point but i think it's because i had less to worry about and had that much more capacity to have a good laugh back then.
I think as I got older there's more worries more distractibility so I seem slower than I used to be in the joke department at first, if I pay attention to it il give it my all to have a laugh because nothing like a good laugh and the world would be a very dull place without it

My "revealing my gender" was a little cryptic, and had quite a few possible interpretations...so it wasn't an easy one to get as such. If I'd read it as written by someone else I'd probably still be wondering exactly what was meant by it (And so there's no confusion,I was referring to public nudity all along ...And it does get you in trouble ) Just to redress the balance, here's a joke that requires little or no effort to get: What kind of bees make milk? Boo-Bees!

After trying to work out the answer, and wracking my brain - just saw what you'd put....urghh!! Also, just want to state quite clearly, what I said about gender was said in COMPLETE innocence and was in no way referring to anything of a darker nature!!

World Cup..... England were 1 v nil down.....for some time...
Finally, they equalised....yippee!!! Swiftly followed by what turned out to be the winning goal....by the opposing side My friend said..she was looking at her family tree..... ......to see if there was 'anything else' in it... e.g. Italian.... who she could support instead!

Crikey! Even with the explanation, I'm struggling, but I think I've got it! She's wondering if there's some french in her ancestry so she can support a better team or something? I sound more autistic than adhd sometimes. Lol.

Some things just don't translate into the written word, especially online.
Like marmalade.

I used to have marmalade on toast for breakfast when I was little and stayed with my grandparents...always cut into 'soldiers'!
Just recently I've been craving marmalade on toast and couldn't understand why...just realised it was because of supine's post...and therein lies the power of advertising!

Now I'm hungry and weirdly amused. I tend to find lots of things funny personally. It's tangental word-play particularly. It's why I eat up Flann O'Brien books. Give me a good pun... or a bad pun and I'm set for an hour or so. Unless I'm in a mood.
Oh and in reverse, I often find jokes hard to tell. Made up ones, I forget the punchlines. More off the cuff wit I have but it gets lost in a mumble.
Marmalade please!

Mmmm... But if Marmite were Kevin Bacon, Marmalade would be 1 Bacons removed via the medium of cheese! Unless I am the only one who eats both of the Marms with cheeses?
