Does anyone else here have no control when it comes to spending money I have a terrible tendency to spend without thinking through and saving for something more important. How have you overcome this,

For me personally, I've overcome it by being so far in debt I cannot get credit for anything anymore and that if I don't pay what I owe, the bailiffs will come knocking... After my monthly repayments, I have little to spend so if I can't afford it, I simply can't have it now Cutting my credits card up didn't work, it took a county court judgement and an attachment order on my house to stop my gallop

I used to not be great especially when it came to CDs but what I do now is that I've got into the habit of taking out the money I need each week and then not using my debit card for anything else. I keep my purse with it in away from my computer (there's no chance I can remember the card number etc. without looking at it!).
Also whenever I've been offered a credit card from my bank, I've declined.
My major difficulty now is the supermarket so I try to get in and out as fast as possible so that I don't see anything I don't need!

I have never been truly out of control with spending, in fact, being brought up by a compulsive gambler father taught me to be very sensible with money. But I did get a thrill from regular on-line purchases (that I could afford - I don't do debt due to my dad causing us misery as kids). I had some Amazon gift cards and used to buy something reguarly, weekly, and enjoyed the process. HOWEVER, since being on Strattera for 10 weeks now, I notice I can leave it alone. I only go to Amazon now if I actually need something rather than browsing for trinkets that made me feel frivolous and pampered.

Little cbt tricks are useful, such as asking someone trusted to look after your bank cards, never carrying much cash with you, transferring any money into accounts where you need to give some advance notice before taking cash out. Anything that reduces your chance to be impulsively spending.

Thanks probiotic girl. This ios exactly how i've managed to be debt free for two years now, occasional slip ups... but nothing too major.

Nice one. CBT is fab, isn't it? Practical small steps that can be incorporated into anyone's life.
