Hi all, not been here for a while but I really need some input.
I am on ritalin still working out the dose for me etc and I wondered how it affects your mood. Before ritalin I mostly had daily/hourly mood changes and now they last longer and are just as intense, last high was worst I ever had. It lasted 10 days and I had little sleep, I knew what was happening but couldn't stop. I stayed up until 3am painting which led to me painting nearly everything over a number of days then I did designs. It was a happy time of extreme motivation. I didn't knock it as I was my best ever. My health visitor was concerned and contacted the mental health team with my permission. 4 weeks later I see them when I am quite depressed. They refer me on to a local ADHD specialist, the person you see when you are medicated to what they understand is a satisfactory level. I saw him today. WOW.. He says it is all ADHD and said when the medication is right I will be able to take a second to find ways of calming myself, and the medication making moods last longer is it working. I do believe I have the ADHD I am diagnosed with but I do also believe I have a mood problem they are ignoring as that is what effects my life and the lives of people around me the most.
Sorry if I banged on a bit but I really feel i need input from people who can relate. Em x

Hi mrsh Sorry you're going through these blips I have mentioned before that I think it is bipolar disorder.... I am now diagnosed with both.....I am still awaiting Ritalin, and the Maudsley are totally ok with me doing this without any bp meds....I wanted to come off them, but my local psych is a bit more wary as it can trigger hypomania.....it hasn't for me in the past when I tried my daughter's meds for a period of time pre-diagnosis, but I have experienced it with antidepressants...they triggered the worst and most scary episode I had ever had, a mixed episode, so very low feelings, but highly agitated mood, and a very dangerous state to be in.... so, I think you should persist....really bad highs, and lasting for so long (mine are usually productive and 4 days to a week) are a real danger and you may need either a lower dose of Ritalin, or to add a small dose of a mood stabiliser....and it is worth realising that ADHD specialists and mood specialists often only know their own field....this has even been the case for the experts at the Maudsley, who are obviously world renowned..... its an an easy thing to overcome/adjust, whereas the dangers of not looking into it are high sending you hugs....x x x and hopefully the courage and strength to push just that one more time

Thank you. They are really pushing against it being anything to do with bp and are convinced it is hyper not mania. I think it was hypomania tbh but nobody has mentioned it at all. The issue is they think that because I am aware of what is happening it is the ADHD. When my highs come in to play which is quite rare maybe once to twice a year, I can't see it when it first starts but if someone mentions it, it is all I focus on but it changes none of the behaviour. I am so driven physically and mentally that it doesn't feel like an option. When it is the happy high I notice it later but the angry high is hell and it is picked up on by others straight away. The feeling of watching myself without being able to intervene comes to mind. I have kept a mood diary suggested by my gp but nobody else is bothered. I despair.

Fwiw it sounds very much like bp to me too. I know for myself, as well as ADHD meds are working for me I'm nowhere near in a position to come off anti depressants and mood stabilisers. I simply would not be able to manage my moods without them xx

Thank you Petra and fuzzywuzzy, I will keep trying to discuss it with them. I feel they have made their mind up. The guy yesterday said 'driven by a motor is an adhd symptom though isn't it' and hyper is hyperkinetic another adhd symptom so it is looking more and more likely it is adhd only. It is highly frustrating. He was also on transmit, he didn't want to listen to me at all. xx
