I just don't get Monty Python. I don't find it funny it's too weird!!
I think I spend too long trying to work out what's happening (like with normal films). And that's obviously not the point!
I'm trying to like Monty Python.. But I can't keep up with all of its weird..

Comedy is very, very, very important!! supine reminded me of this recently. I was thinking of starting a thread purely for comedy clips. Some of the 'not the 9'oclock news' clips are hilarious.

Bee, it's possible to 'get' Python-esque humour but still not find it funny. Most of it isn't actually meant to be 'gotten' anyway, it's just mad-cap surreaslism. If you want to hear something truly hilarious, look up Derek & Clive (aka Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore - although I would warn you that it's quite 'adult' ) The Python films were probably best, starting with Life of Brian and then Holy Grail a close second, but a lot of the humour (just like the Ben Elton stuff like Black Adder etc.) is very much 'of the time' and doesn't age quite as well as some classic comedy from the likes of Tommy Cooper or Ronnie Barker for example. In short, don't get stressed about Python, there are lots of other things to laugh at

I don't get Monty Python either, just the same as I don't get the Goons humour (but maybe this is a generation thing).
Altho I did love 'Life of Brian', maybe because this was a story rather than a weird sketch.
I laugh at: Kath & Kim Not Going Out Bob Downe (Mark Trevorrow) - totally cheesy and not to everyone's taste :} Tim Minchin Flight of the Conchords

I love bits of Python - but never found it consistently side-splitting - but if I told my OH that he'd probably disown me! Loved the songs though....my mum had a Python record and I remember singing along to the Lumberjack song from about three -in fact that's probably what made me the open-minded person I am today! I think comedy's saved me in some of my darkest times - that may sound silly, but I honestly think it's true. Music's has helped too, but a good laugh is the best!! I always had crushes on comedians instead of pop stars. Definitely agree with Tim Minchin and FOTC Mouse (especially Jemain's sugarlumps! ). Favourite shows over the years: Fist of Fun, Father Ted, Black Books, The Day Today, The Mighty Boosh, Green Wing, IT Crowd, Hyperdrive, Stewart lee's Comedy Vehicle.

One of my favourite 'surreal' Python sketches - especially if you are a cat person...

I grew up with Python as a kid and it sort of set my humour from then on - especially the Gilliam montages. But for me it's a subtler form of satire and gets to the heart of the our cultural failings and the Establishment's weaknesses without spelling it out to the audience in more direct terms.

My brain/knowledge is wholly underdeveloped in these areas, so this would explain my complete lack of understanding over this kind of humour. Like when I (occasionally) watch the news and 16 yr olds are asked their opinion over some political issue...I'm jaw on the floor...how do they know all this stuff?? I think even when I'm 80 I won't be able to talk like that about politics. Adhd meds, if anything, are making me more aware of just how much I don't know that others seem to have naturally picked up along the way. Or maybe I am just a bit thick.

petra I feel the same way! People start political conversations around me, and I just think 'where does one find this information?' because I just have no idea what they're talking about! I expect a lot of it is to do with my point-blank refusal to watch the news or read the papers. I'm much too sensitive, I don't want to hear about the latest child/dog mauling, murder, animal cruelty, etc. story; it's too terrible for me to cope with on a daily basis! I'd rather be ignorant. But I also have so little idea about what's going on in Afghanistan or Syria. And I'm a quite ashamed of that. I've tried to research it, to understand but I simply can't make it stick. There are subjects that just will not go into my head no matter how hard I try. Geography! I've got NO idea what countries are next to each other! A world map is a constant source of embarassment! 'What's this country?' ... 'Err... Africa?' 'No! Africa's a continent not a country, and that's over there!' Xx Bee xX

Ditto to everything you've said here...each and every single point, literally. And it does feel hugely shameful and embarrassing - it looks like you just don't care when the exact opposite is true.
These things must require a section of brain we just don't have??

I love Monty Python!
Different people have different comedy tastes I suppose. So long as you enjoy the stuff you watch it doesn't matter too much the type of humour.
My mum and none of my house mates are from the UK and when I watch any British comedy they're just left confused! Whilst I don't particularly dislike US comedy, I don't find it anywhere near as funny as the surreal, sarcastic or understated humour we tend to get here. However one of my favourite comedies is a Cantonese one.
I think it depends a lot on what you're brought up with and the country you're born in doesn't necessarily determine what you find funny. I have British friends who grew up watching US comedies and don't get Monty Python.
