Apologies if this is a known strategy or if I've inadvertently nicked it.
I just made some food in the kitchen (Cheese and toast, scarily using the grill. Shit, which I will no go and turn off!)
I made myself stay in the kitchen while it was working. Hard, I can tell you, as I remembered a gazillion things I needed to do elsewhere. And I didn't burn the toast. The dishes even got washed.
So maybe a 'stay in the room until the task is finished strategy' is something we can try?

I stood next to the grill both the last two mornings in an effort to not burn the crumpets (shop was out of bread and they won't go in the toaster), but I still had burnt crumpets both mornings. I need to put my laptop in a different room, except there isn't one.

Oh dear, it is such a problem!
Two years ago I nearly burnt the house down, so got a massive scare.
One of my business folders was in the kitchen and got badly smoke damaged. For a whole year, every time I opened the file, the smokey smell reminded me of my stupidity.
Best to get a foolproof strategy.
Nowadays, I always(as long as I remember) switch the hob off if I leave the kitchen.

I wired the overhead light for my hob into the oven/hob wall switch. If it's on I know I haven't switched it off.
The trouble is, it's a phasing LED light and I quite like it gently shifting colours in the background. It does make sure I switch the stove off if I leave the house, though, which is the main thing.
