I found out last year I had ADHD and dyslexia. I have suffred with the symptoms since a child and dealt with it through cocaine addiction. I stopped taking cocaine 11 years ago and I have been managing it in other ways.
I get very frustrated and my anxiety goes through the roof at times. I have done lots of therapy and self-help and I am still feeling like I am on a roller coaster one minute ok next minute I can be suicidle. It is really getting me down now and I feel like I am loosing hope!!!
What might help and is my exstreme frustration and anxiety related to ADHD.
tHANKS IN ADVANCE rON

Hello Ron Frustration and anxiety are both common in ADHDers. Knowing what might help is not easy since we all respond differently. First off - are you being medicated and, if you are, could it be improved? After that things like diet, exercise and coping strategies can be looked at. Knowing yourself and how everything keys together helps you understand what's going on and what your best course is. Sharing the experience seems to help me a lot - both here and by meeting as many other ADHDers as possible. Hopefully someone less sleepy will be along shortly with the secret cure we have stashed under the sofa I'm off to bed - maybe catch you tomorrow

Thanks Dave, I am not on medication at the moment. I am a little cautious because of addiction problems in the past. As I said I used cocaine for years as a self prescribed medication without realising it. I do exercise and this really helps although not as much as it used to.

Hi i totally understand where coming from my anxiety through roof and frusstration bad, amount of times i've banged head against wall or smashed things is un believerable. Im on the start of the long diagnostic root, and am not sleeping head spinning etc. Specialist put be back on anixety pills and beta blockers so should relax me alittle till they start me on adhd meds. Ive read omega 3 helps so started taking them. Been refered to anixety managment and counselling. Self esteem a definate issue to, what about you?
As for coping straytergies, ive had to declutter my home and life. By going for a less cluttered look, so I know whats in all my draws cuboards etc and housework easier, I also rehomed three of my six cats caue they were running accross road. I was doing somthing nearly every evening, so stopped one night school course and go to gym and weight watchers on saturday morning and housework sat afternoon, to help when return to work in two weeks.
Im also looking for other coping statergies i like you am coming to terms with things but im determined to change and stick in a job more than five minutes.
Good Luck Vicky

Hello again Ron - I'm up again Medication would be an obvious step - it would probably reduce your stress levels very well in the short term. To address your addiction fears.......a lot of us come from a similar background. Fortunately the main medication (methylphenidate hydrochloride - trade name Ritalin or Equasym or Concerta) is sooooo non addictive that it can be used to wean people off cocaine. And don't believe that crap about 'chemical cosh', I'm on it and I'm just as feisty as ever...but also a lot more sensitive to other people. It's worth a go - and you can stop any time you like...my main problem is remembering to take it rather than 'I've gotta have it'. The other stuff if harder to put in place - but sorting your life out to suit you is important. If you are working does your employer have any adjustments in place for you? How about the rest of your life? A low GI diet might help, some supplements might do a bit for you (eg omega3) and endorphins from exercise are great. It's classic self help stuff - identify your weaknesses to reduce them and maximise anything that is positive.

Hi Meggie
Yes I can feel like banging my head against a wall. I self harmed alot in my younger years. I also hated myself and felt very different from other people. I still feel different from other people but kind of like that bit. I have done alot of therapy and my self esteem is alot better now. I just struggle with the mood swings, frustration and anxiety. I can drive my wife mad at times.
Dave thank you for your input, I felt crazy last night and to know somebody heard me was helpfull. I am going to go to my GP and see what they can do. I think I will also go to the meeting in Chiswick.

Get down to that meeting. You know that 'I've always felt different, I'm unique' thing? Go to an ADHD meeting and they all feel the same way - it's great knowing you're actually part of a select gang. It reminds me of a scene from a film I'm not

Yes I agree, I am a part of 12 step recovery meetings so I see this working all the time.
I found some info on addiction and ADHD and a clinic in London Capio Nightingale, who deal with this issue. I am going to give them a call.

hey hothead!...
What's the 12 step recovery thing?... is that like AA/NA?
Dave's right about Methylphenidate not being addictive,
-But if you wanted to be double sure, you could try Atomexetine. Because it takes a couple weeks to start working, it's very unaddictive.

Hi Meggie
I have used exercise, meditation, therapy chocolate and sometimes I have a scream.
Hi Matt
yes I go to AA, NA AND CA. It does help keep me away from drugs and drink which I have used to self medicate.

Hey, what is the approximate half life of atomoxetine? Aha that took me almost 20 seconds..... Shocking. I wonder how many person hours were spent on all of the factors to be able to make a summary document that I found on google within 2 seconds? 1000? 1500? 2000? 4000? Oh well........ I suppose half life is one of the factors that affects speed of absorption and length and severity of side effects of all drugs... Perhaps it is best to test one's half life breakdown of a drug before giving them a medication.... After all, if they need a circulating 1 unit per time unit...based on say 1mg of active.......then a test could perhaps allow better starting dose, although I suppose allergy and anaphylactic shock/sickness are all important. www.medscape.com/viewarticle/489321_3 The mean elimination half-life of atomoxetine after oral administration is 5.2 hours.[16] In poor metabolizers, the mean elimination half-life is 21.6 hours, a result of reduced clearance of atomoxetine ( Table 1 ). This results in an area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) that is about 10-fold greater and a steady-state Cmax that is approximately 5-fold greater than those of extensive metabolizers.[16] The elimination half-life of the metabolite 4-hydroxyatomoxetine is 6-8 hours in extensive metabolizers, whereas the elimination half-life of N-desmethylatomoxetine is 34-40 hours in poor metabolizers.[16] Greater than 80% of the dose of atomoxetine is excreted primarily in the urine as 4-hydroxyatomoxetine. Seventeen percent of the total dose is excreted through the feces. Less than 3% of the dose is excreted unchanged, indicating extensive biotransformation.[16] Ah, so what I have learned is er, that my head hurts now.....

Thank people, it is nice having a place to share when I feel insane.
I enquired at a place called Capio Nightingale Hospital and they want £1000 for an assessment and £300 an hour for treatment. Wow that is expensive. I have had an assessment already and £300 an hour is way to much for me!!!

Meggie, i was commenting on Hotheats £300 ph!! I think £400 is reasonable for a complete assessment, but £1000 for assessment + a further £300ph is rediculous, who can afford that??

I got mine from dr R Joseph at Woodbourne Priory in Birmingham. He was excellent very very througher and professional if I had loads money Id stay u nder him as he is much better than my Nhs psyci. The ironic thing is if i lived in a certain area of dudley id have been referred to him for free and not the pychi im under its a cr** postcode lottery. He also wanted to start a cli nic for adults with adhd and aspergers in Dudley but the idea was turned down it makes me sick.
I apologise for rant sorry.. How did doctors appointment go hothead?
