I am really pleased to say now I am on a stable dose of Dex I am going round clearing up piles of crap that have been lying around for years. I've also been tidying up the garden and hand weeding flower beds that have been badly neglected.
Whoever says that you can't get motivation from a drug hasn't experienced it yet.

OMG sooooo funny! me and clutter, constantly, look we can't help it so chill, seriously it really gets me down sometimes, you know were our own special little breed of clever and intelligent people - we may be crap at tidying - but were all great at other things. ;D

i have realised that i just have a clutter rota, this month maybe its the dining room, so then i will blitz that, but half way through get totally cheesed off, pile things up into neat but still full of crap piles, and move them methodically into another room..... and worst of all, i still find myself with a big smug grin when i look at how nice and tidy the dining room looks, one bit of my brain fails to tell the other bit that i havent really done anything except shift it to another room.... clutter rota!

I'm slowly but surely decluttering without resorting to my ultimate declutter tactic which is to shift continents (done it three times people!).
I was gutted though on the weekend - my favourite pair of shorts finally died. I didn't have any other shorts to wear and had to go online and buy some from M&S. This simple living is all very well, but if you have to wear jeans in hot weather it suck!

Yup, I have plenty of clutter. Much of it in the piles of litter by my side of the bed (which is by the window, away from the room so that my wife doesn't have to look at it all!). The weird thing is that I know where everything is. By contrast, when I'm making dinner, two seconds after I put the garlic press / oven glove / lemon grass down, I haven't a clue where it is. If anything, I find it best to leave clutter. The simple reason is that clutter-clearance is one of those Parkinsonian tasks - i.e. it'll expand to fill an entire day if I'm not careful, and displace more important work. So you could say that I deal with clutter by not caring about it! P.S. My daughter (age 8) is watching me type this and wants me to include the smiley face with sunglasses. How can a daddy say no?

Been away for a while - just re-read this and thought I'd update re the council tax. A little while ago I took up Erin Remien's offer of free coaching for a fixed period. She helped me enormously with the council tax - looked up a clause about back payments (and sent it to me) and then wrote me a letter that I just had to fill in a couple of details to send off. It resulted in me getting my rent and council tax backdated - yay! I'm back to being a mess, the house is still full of clutter and crap, but at least it still contains my daughter, my 'stuff' and me too! (Erin is contactable via www.addandyou.com/ before you ask. No I'm not on commission or being paid or anything.)

Clutter busting is very important to my being able to handle ADHD.
Clutter is tackled practically in the ADHD book by Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo (2006). You Mean I’m Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?!. New York: Scribener. I found their ideas fantastic, my only advice is do one one small suggestion at a time and stick with it until it becomes habit. I didn't do that and my enthusiasm caused problems at home.
For sympathy and how clutter links into ADHD try Sari Solden MS, LMFT (2005). Women with Attention Deficit Disorder. I can't remember but she may also give some helpful ideas.

By habit, I mean something you do regularly rather than do the job once and never touch it again. I have to keep on top of clutter busting and now its something I do almost automatically. Unless it is a big mess to sort out, then I get sort of stuck.

I think putting my seatbelt on is one of the only 'habits' I have, and even that I have to 'remember' to do sometimes!! I can't think of many things I do every day at the same time... I brush my teeth at all times of the day, I've even purchased tooth paste and a tooth brush when i was out because I all the sudden remembered i didn't brush my teeth that morning but wanted to... i have to have someone or notes to remind me of most things and I very rarely do them for very long with out forgetting them for a couple days! so for one to tell, at least me, to make a habit of something is very foreign. I fore one am not a habitual or addictive personality.

Our series will take a very therapeutic approach, following a group of sufferers on a unique treatment programme: a combination of group therapy, one-on-one treatments, and specialist de-cluttering services. Yeah I keep things in case I'm gonna need them, like boxes for returns or anything. A few weeks later and I know I don't need them but too late, it's already taking up space and I cba moving anything.

I have piles of clutter everywhere. it's all down to my o/h (adhd, ocd, tourettes and serial hoarder) and my child .. same as the above without the tourettes. It seriously freaks me out because my OCD leads me to file everything away in order .. alphabetical or numerical. I know where everything is because that's where I put it.... but yeh anyway, if anybody would like some clutter, call me RR

I'm sorry. I clearly came across as condescending and did not mean to do so. I missed your joke as clutter busting was and continues to be a painful issue for me; I cry rather than smile. Please let me try to explain my habit comment better.
I am a hoarder by nature, finding it difficult to let go of things. Something I believe to be one of my ADHD symptoms. Sorting the backlog of stuff I have accumulated was and continues to be a massive task. It is not only backbreaking, time consuming work it is an emotional issue each time I "get rid of" things to which I feel attached. Not only that, those around me find it much easier to clutter bust and it makes me feel inadequate.
To keep on top of my piles I have to change and control my nature i.e. my habits. The only reasonI have attempted this is through reading Sari Solden's book and one called "You Mean I’m Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?!" by Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo (2006). Together these ADHD friendly books gave me some hope that I may be able to clutter bust. I hoped to pass on my experience.
Like you, I'm not by nature a habitual personality. ADHD makes me impulsive and distracted; rarely doing things the same way every time. As a result of undiagnosed ADHD I have developed the comorbid condition of bipolar II. This exacerbates any problem or task, and my ADHD. Impulsivity and distraction are far from helpful when I am trying to clutter bust a backlog; and just as importantly they interfere with my ability to maintain my clutter busting "systems".
Once again, my apologies for coming across in an insensitive way.

I have lots of stuff, and yep, every table has little piles of stuff on it too. That's me trying to be tidy! One of the problems is my flitting from one hobby to the next, but not before buying tons of materials for projects that I never get around too. It all has to go somewhere. I'm not great at getting rid of things either, I have all sorts of things in the loft from previous obsessions, and I mean serious ones that lead to spending way more than I care to think about. My most obvious example, other than a couple of folders of Pokemon cards would be boxes of My Little Pony toys. I started collecting them about 7 years ago and for 2-3 years bought over 200, I set up a website to help people ID ponies they bought second hand and went to meet ups and all that jazz. When my web host accidentally wiped the entire website I realised I hadn't got back ups (due to a long story) over 300 pages of database were gone. Funnily enough the obsession was quickly replaced by something else, and the ponies are all out of sight and not on ebay where they should be!
One of the reasons I started medication was to help with the fact that I know how impulsive I am and spending money seems to go hand in hand with that. I bought one issue of 'The Art of Quilting' a couple of weeks ago and spent over £50 on fabrics on ebay in the following two days. It's not good.

My partner, my son & me all have ADHD, we are both self employed & trying to run two businesses from home & our home is more like a warehouse/office most of the time... can't get away from it, it's like pushing jelly up a hill & tidying up can be as much use as a chocalate fireguard lol ;-D Nightmare!!

i have learned to just throw it all away..... i can't stand clutter i say that because my brain is so disorganized that my stuff has to be out of site or it bugs me... every month or so i fill a couple of black bags of stuff and throw it away............although you can guarantee that you always want something you have thrown out the next day and it a good excuse to but more stuff.........

I have piles of clutter everywhere BUT they are organised piles and categorised piles within the organised piles and even some alphabetical piles within the categorised piles .... whatever.. it's still clutter.... ;D ;D ;D
