is anyone having trouble empathising with others? and could this be due to others not empathising with us?

I have more trouble empathising with NTs than with 'us'. Lack of empathy is more autistic or PD than ADHD though 'we' are not famed for empathy. It's also bloody hard to like anyone who doesn't like you. Proper Mother Teresa. The weirdo

If anything thats something I find I dont tend to struggle with, in fact I am getting better at knowing who is worth empathising with and who is not.

Anyone that I cannot relate to gets no empathy at all from me. People that have strong beliefs that are not based on fact wind me up quite a lot too. Suffice to say - there are far more people in this world that I don't really get on with, than those that I do. Probably why my real friends can be counted on one hand eh John

Ha,
Yes, infact i'd go so far to say that i genuinly have no feelings towards 90% of the people i meet or see. People tell me stories about horrible things happening to them or others and i just dont feel anything.
Its probably my worst trait and one that my physch asked me quite a bit about.
My Mrs absolutely hates it and we joke about it saying i have no heart.

I just don't see or hear people... It's not a lack of empathy, I have bucketloads - even for those who I find unpleasant - but only if I notice...only if I'm switched on enough to consider their situation. So I do get accused of insensitivity. Although highly critical at a distance, I always thought that being non-judgemental when considering individuals is part of the ADHD territory. I do weird stuff that other people don't like - I know that my motivations are complicated but seldom bad - it makes sense that it's the same for others. You don't have to like others, or even approve of them to be able to imagine their feelings.

I struggle with 'empathy' but I'm diagnosed with asperger's. I don't respond emotionally to others very well or recognise when another may need an emotional response from me. I dont think other people are able to empathise with me either though, but that could be a 'theory of mind' thing.

I am empathic from a distance. I can't get nearer because that's just........urgh.

I don't respond emotionally to others very well or recognise when another may need an emotional response from me. I find this too - I have always found it very difficult to empathise. I am learning to become more emotionally responsive but it is a deliberate effort and sometimes I just don't have the energy...

I think I might empathise too much, but I assume that's part of my inability to control my emotions too well. I get quite 'infected' by others' moods, and can't detach. I also don't always get it right, either - bit like finishing others' sentences, but wrong. So I'll assume that something is going to be bad, or good, and feed an 'appropriate' empathic response, only to find I'm completely wrong! I guess keeping my mouth shut would help, but that's tricky.....
I also get v upset by gory movies, but I can watch myself being stitched up with clinical interest. Weird.

Weird. i know just what you mean about getting 'infected' by peoples moods and not being able to detatch and i have also assumed that my inability to regulate my emotions too well has had a big impact on this

I really seem to get affected by what is happening around me.
If people are stressed/not happy it affects me.
So, people happy = me happy.
I try to keep situations calm because then I can stay calm.

I'm just rude to be honest. To everybody. When the Indian Ocean Tsunami happened. I couldn't leave it alone. I just had to be rude to the victims of that horrible disaster. It says a lot about me that I was insulting innocent dead people who haven't done anything to me. My logical side knows that it's wrong. Which is why now days I just pretend I have empathy.
Which is suprising because I have very little despite being a person who can't control his emotions.

I work in a chemist with someone who I am sure has Munchausen's syndrome. The way she tries to milk sympathy out of the customers & colleagues really makes me fume

Ha ha Phil, atleast hypochondriacs believe they really are ill.
Munchaussens know they aren't ill, but will inflict injury on themselves or fake symptoms in order to get medical attention.
