I was diagnosed with ADHD last year, had always known I was different to my friends but never thought anything of it really. After my diagnosis I informed people I work With and my friends about it. The thing that I find so annoying is that most people do not take it as a serious mental health condition they seem to think I just "misbehave" or am just more "energetic" has anyone else had this thing of people not treating it as a serious problem?

It is pretty simple. When somebody is on wheelchair, haven't got hand, leg, eye you and everybody else can see it. When somebody has down syndrome, or any othe again everybody can see it. Because they can see it, they know what limits disable person. When somebody is autistic - people around can see awkward behaviour, same with asperger. When somebody is shisofrenic others might be scared especially when that person was threatening. Most of mental health issues/disabilities are visible. ADHD is not visible. We don't run around naked when we have bad day, we don't threat to kill others (most of us and when we are not furious ) we struggle but people don't see it. When they see straight away they have explanation: lazy, low performance, poor time keeping. If you will tell anyone about your forgetfulness, loosing focus, they will sey: no big deal, everybody does that. With or without biological knowledge most people can't or don't want understand that our brain works differently. We were born with it and we will die with it. Why they can't understand? Cos they are idiots (lack of basic brain funcion which is thinking or listening with understanding) Why they don't want to understand: because they are narrow minded, self orientated people with absolute lack of any kind of knowledge.

Amen to that I just find it so frustrating how can you not take it seriously when it is a full on medical condition if only they can see how our brains do work would make it so much easier!! Suppose all we can do is prove to the world that ADHD is hard but we are still awesome people ?

I think I'm tired recently with showing how brilliant I am, cos anyway my bum is kicked.
It is frustrating but my question is: does your frustration bothers them? No, than what is the reason for trying to educate idiots if they are knowledge proof?
I use to fallow one thing, and I consider it as fundamental truth ( I even use to say it loudly) 98% of society are idiots , and I'm a part of remaining 2%. At least it helped me with my low self estime.

We've been chatting about this on a few other threads.... wait for it....., MIND do not see it as a mental health condition They must therefore be one of our target audiences.... as well as those that are willing to try and understand.... those that are not so willing....are indeed ignorant....and maybe not worth our time and energy

I'm shocked mind don't see it as a condition that is bad I think we need support to try and educate the people who don't understand it or the ones who are unwilling to see it as an actual condition and not just a load of people acting a bit crazy!!

We are pioneers, we will raise awareness ! Brilliant idea to target MIND, I'm suprised they don't understand it. In the past soldiers were shot for having PTSD, people with depression told to pull their socks up, people with AUtistic disorders believed to have cold hearted mothers who didn't care for them....ADHD will become more understood! as more and more people realise what it actually Is and get away from the loose associations with drugging kids for being kids etc bla bla It's so hard though but we got each other

has anyone else had this thing of people not treating it as a serious problem? yeah i think probably everybody on here at some point or another! then again they used to tie "left handers" hands behind their backs to teach them to write properly and thought that being homosexual was a " depraved" choice that people made Education, education, education !!!!!! (although being a "closet" ADHDer, i should perhaps heed my own words more! ) People really do underestimate the damage ADHD can inflict on a persons life unfortunately, i think there's probably no-one on here that hasn't experienced first hand how much deeper it goes than than "excess energy" or being a "bit naughty" !!!

You are totally right it's just a shame that everyone does experience this as if adhd isn't hard enough!! And can I ask why you are a "closet adhder"

Yeah I see your point in that sense I suppose but if you don't be true to yourself and just be like yeah I have adhd and what? Then you won't ever be able to make people understand it's hard explaining it to people but the more you educate the easier it gets even if people are idiots and don't understand

I only meant late in my eyes as I have only heard of people who have been diagnosed when they where kids. Have read stories of people not being diagnosed till they are in there 50s though suppose I am lucky in that sense
