A brain scan isn't really part of diagnosis at the moment (that may change in the future). A referral to psychiatrist via your GP is the usual way forward. Objective tools such as QbTest or Braingaze can aid a diagnosis, but a formal diagnosis is still down to psychiatric assessment.

What kind of CBT? AFAIK no ADHD specific CBT has arrived in the area yet, though you keep hearing people saying 'I had CBT'. So did I, for depression. The Priory might make encouraging noises about it but so far it's not been 'the real thing' (though all it takes if for them to import the right person with the usual bait - a boatload of cash - so I can always be wrong). I will keep my good ear to the ground for any developments - it's about time we had it available. Hoping for ADHD specific. I can find CBT counsellors who state they cover ADHD but their 'specialities' read like a tick list. Any thoughts on having sessions by phone or Skype?

Any recommendations - or suggestions for how I might go about finding a good one?

The first appointment, which was an "Initial ADHD assessment and consultation with collection of collateral history and completion of report", was £480. This was enough for a diagnosis and that may well be all you need, although my wife and I went back for another two hour appointment, which cost £300, mainly because we'd found the first session so beneficial and we still had more to talk about. Rob then drew up a "shared care agreement" for my GP. Essentially it says that he'll do annual assessments if the GP is happy to prescribe the medication he advises and monitor my blood pressure. That way I've been getting the medication on the NHS, rather than privately. The 1hr Skype call cost £150. Again, it was not entirely essential but was useful to talk through how the medication was going once I'd started titrating. Going forward I expect I'll have annual one hour sessions - although I could go on the waiting list to see an NHS psychiatrist instead.

Melissa Orlov's "The ADHD Effect on Marriage" is an excellent book on how ADHD can place a major strain on relationships. If you both read the first chapter you may recognise yourselves and realise that the problems you have are with ADHD rather than each other.

Not north east but a quick hop down the A1 is yorkshireadultadhd.co.uk which operates out of the Tower Clinic in Leeds. I have my first appointment there later this month so I can't give any recommendation yet but it appears more specialist than the psychiatrist I was offered at the Priory in Altrincham which is more local to me. An update to the above. I was diagnosed ADHD inattentive type after two sessions at the Tower Clinic and a follow up Skype consultation. I am now on methylphenidate prescribed by my GP. I was very happy with the diagnosis process. Rob is a very good and compassionate listener and very thorough and I'm happy to recommend him.

I was diagnosed inattentive type in March - when my oldest was two and a half and youngest was less than a year old. I suddenly became a far more capable and attentive parent after starting treatment so my guilt was more with the realisation of how incapable I'd been up to that point. I unknowingly coped pretty well (though not perfectly!) with ADHD before they came along, bringing the extra dose of chaos and sleep loss that only children can deliver. Now I have treatment I feel like I have a whole new lease of life so If one of them does inherit my ADHD I feel much better knowing that theirs will be diagnosed and treated early.
