Hunter Glad to hear that you can come to the support group meeting in Glasgow on 12 Feb, I look forward to meeting you. I have been offline for a bit, so this is my first time to log onto the forum in 2011. Your GP is wrong in that South Lanarkshire do not have provision for adult ADHD treatment in the NHS - but thats farmers for you. Madscot has already had the same fight with the same NHS Trust, (he did get an NHS dx and medication finally).
Gordon Brown is doing a great job and provides a very though assessment, but even so one of the biggest barriers to overcome is getting your GP practice to take on the shared care. There is no recognised clinical dx pathway for adult ADHD in Scotland via the NHS and GPs use this to say that they cannot provide treatment. One of the many mental health inequalities that need to be addressed.
One impulsive act can land an adhd adult in prison at a cost to society of approx £55,000 per year, you say that your meds cost £174 per year private. We need to get the message through to the people that deal with the strategy for the NHS in Scotland. There is some work on this front already underway, but we need many more members in the group in order to prove unquestionable that there is a real need.

Our Scottish support group is progressing reasonably well, we now have a listing on NHS24 and have started networking with community groups. We have 4-8 people attending each meeting and have started to be noticed by some of the Scottish Community Health Partnerships.
We are having our next support group meeting on Saturday 14 August. 2:30pm Costa Coffee, 205 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. I will love to hear from anyone that has not attended our support group meetings, but is interested in joining up with like minded individuals. If you think you can get along to the meeting on Saturday, please try to do so. We appreciate that it can be a big step to come to the first meeting.
We will also be arranging a nuro feedback workshop, the venue is expected to be in East Lothian and we are looking for a date in September. Please e-mail me if you would like to be sent further details, these will be sent out as soon as we have made the final arrangements.
Our regular support group meetings are still on the second Sunday in the month, ie Sunday 12 September for the next meeting in Falkirk.

Any thoughts on how to lobby the NHS in Scotland for some improved medical therapy for adult ADHD in Scotland? There is only one clinic - it does a very good job, but is ridiculously under staff to cope with the number of adult adults that are referred to it. With impending funding cuts it looks like we are going backwards rather than forwards.

Well, we have a google egroup up and running now so members can post comments and discussions on things discussed at the meetings. Provided I can remember to keep it uptodate that is!!
madscot you wrote: "And Im going to change my name I think. Everyone keeps thinking Im this mad guy called Scott. Wonder why?"
Personally I think Mad Scott sounds good - you should keep it.

We have a support group meeting in Glasgow this afternoon. Four of us are travelling from Edinburgh together, so it might turn out to be a group outing aswell! The meeting after this will be in Falkirk on Sunday 11th July - details available on the web site. sites.google.com/site/scottishadhdadultsorg

Freewill Keep plugging away at the system, you have had a long and bumpy ride. Combined AS/ADHD can be tough and there is little help in Scotland at present, especially if you have high functioning AS.
I am still trying to arrange a support group meeting in Glasgow - earliest I can fix is 1st week in July due to hols/other commitments. Next meeting is in Falkirk on 13th June, but I appreciate that that's a long journey for you.
If you wish I can take up your case with Hugh O'Donnell MSP. He is sponsor for the proposed Scottish Autism Bill and has some sympathies for mental health issues. You posted info about this in February.

Aye, good turnout for the Falkirk meeting, we have a core membership now so the group should gather its own momentum. Next meeting for 13 June is still on, Falkirk venue.

There were 5 attendees at the meeting in Edinburgh on 11 April, the Falkirk location was selected by general consensus of the group members. At the Falkirk meeting on 12 May 9 people attended so I guess it was a good choice. We would still like to hold a Glasgow meeting and one of the members has agreed to host it at Costa Coffee, Saughiehall Street, the next meeting however is still fixed for the Falkirk venue - Sunday 13th June, Costa Coffee, Kirk Wynd @ 2:30pm.

Jimscot You and your friend will be made very welcome at any of the support group meetings whenever you are ready to attend. For the Central Scotland support group, the meetings are posted on the forum calendar and on the group website at sites.google.com/site/scottishadhdadultsorgAlso if you wish to email me at scottishadhd@googlemail.com I will add you to the mailing list. Same message applies to anyone eles who is interested in joining the Central Scotland Adult ADHD Support Group and because most members need to travel a far distance to get to the meetings we would like to make more use of e-mail and also posting on this forum. Extra message for jimscot - please browse this website there is a wealth of information available here and it can save you hours of hunting for information on the internet.

The ADHD Clinic is now set up and running, details are: Lothian Adults with ADHD Clinic NHS Lothian outpatients Department Andrew Duncan Clinic Royal Edinburgh Hospital Morningside Terrace Edinburgh EH10 5HF Tel: 0131 537 6247
Anyone have personal experience of this Clinic? I think NHS Lothian should be commented - as far as I am aware this is the first Adult ADHD Clinic in Scotland.

I am booked on the Simply Wellbeing workshop in Edinburgh on 29 May. The cost is £75 for the day for bookings before 15 May. The entry in the forum calendar says that the workshop costs £125, I think this must be a mistake.

Sherry Sounds like good mindfulness to me!
Just try it for 10 minutes a day they said - I managed 30 seconds on the first attempt - it's like trying to catch a butterfly while walking on a tightrope, but it does seem to be beneficial.
I can't see the point in being sent on mindfulness courses rathert than being prescribed medication. If the meds help you to access the left side of your brain then the mindfulness will show you how to use it.

We discussed Mindfulness at our support group meeting on 11 April, it was something completly new to me. Basically a Zen meditation practice that focusses on the here and forces you to concentrate on what you are experiencing be it washing up, looking at the sky or even just breathing instead of racing with your mind. (Very relevant for ADHD).

China was what he said, should be on his way now. Makes in a bit difficult to run a support group in Glasgow, but I am hoping we will still see some posts from him. Boo posts from La La land so China is not so far.

Hi Guys A very big thank you to Madscot for providing the drive and organising the meetings in Glasgow. Steven has dropped out of circulation somewhat - a job move to China means that he still has commitment, but no resources to run the support group. Therefore I have agreed to pick up the reins for the time being. Keep checking the website at: sites.google.com/site/scottishadhdadultsorgfor updates on meetings etc. and you can still e-mail to scottishadhd@googlemail.com I will get round to replying over the next few days and updating the website. The next meeting will be in Edinburgh on Sunday 11th April at 14:30 (venue to be advised). We already have 3 attendees, but would like to see many more. I will propably pick a coffee shop off Lothian Road or George Street, but it will be hard to find somewhere as good as Costa, Sauchiehall Street. (Madscot you chose well!). We will still keep the same format ie - friendly, confidential, unjudgemental and lots of understanding. So do please turn up if you can; you will be supprised how refreshing it is to meet like minded people. ADD can make you feel very isolated at times, but I don't need to tell you that, I am sure you realise this already. I will post the venue info soon. R
