Hi Lesley and Contrarymary. I have had a think and re- read your posts. I have decided to take a break till Spring, but to try and continue practicing and consolidating on what I've learnt up to and including the body scan. I can do this, and hopefully like you said Lesley, this small beginning will take root, grow and develop. I would still be very interested to hear your experiences as you continue. Also, I want to thank you both for your support and thoughtful advice - if it wasn't for this I would be binning it altogether and I don't want to do that. I have progressed further with this than I did last time, and have seen a glimpse of the positives it has to offer. But, I think if I tried to carry on through the book now I will end up hating it, so for me, at the moment this feels the right/realistic and positive thing to do. Also, when i come back to it I will be more familiar with it plus a bit more established in the basics. Michael - as I am partially taking your advice, I would be more than happy to order you a copy of the book if you pm me your address!

well turns out i'm the cheap skate i only offered him my old book - you've actually bought him a new one well good at least that means you'l be coming back to yours then - cos i went to couple mindfulness workshops/seminars whatever their called at the conference and was very impressed and think even more so that this technique is one of best ways forward (for me anyway ). (especially combined with yoga which i'm finding is helping me more and more every week ) and so am glad i kept my book as havn't come anywhere near doing it whilst carrying the book everywhere so wouldn't be hope in hell without it am knackered tonight and have been on here hours reading and posting - really cos i don't want to be still and start thinking and processing the past few days - but hopefully when have had a decent sleep tonight will be able to share the mindfulness stuff from the conference in a post tomorrow xxxx

Hmmm. This is the conference equivalent of letting your house mate do all the house work, isn't it.

i was thinking that too. mindfully of course. haven't picked up the book yet this week. tho have found myself doing the STOP thing, and the body scan thing. the problem is that you need to actually stop to be mindful, and that can be quite difficult sometimes... much of the time it's hard to get the brain to stop, but that thing of taking three deep breaths and then focussing on thought, then body sensations is really good. and can actually break hyperfocus and get back on track with whatever i'd planned to do before i got distracted. if i let myself stop and STOP...

You've got the book cm? I actually cannot wait to get mine now. I wonder if it's because someone else got it for me. Maybe the next time we all decide to buy the same book, we can buy it for each other so that each person does not own the copy that they currently have. Might make us less complacent? Or similar weird reverse psychology that someone else might know better?

Mindfulness Season 2.As before, the book I'm using is "The Mindfulness Prescription for Adult ADHD" by Lidia Zylowska. I'm hopefully returning to this older and wiser. It would be great if anyone wanted to either return or join me Step 1. Read part 1 of the book, in preparation for part 2 which is an 8 step programme.

I'm still plodding on with reading Part 1. I'm getting sooo much more out of it than I did the first time round.
I think the key is, or at least for me, is to bring this kind of thinking/ awareness into your life throughout the day. This IS making a tangible difference to me.
I am going to attempt the 8 steps - even if only to get an idea of what they are and where it's all going. But my goal is NOT going to be as it was before, which was to sit and be mindful 30 minutes twice a day.
I am currently really encouraged that odd moments of mindfulness through the day has a genuine impact.

petra, we meet again! Have just spent what seems like hours reading the whole of this thread. Having borrowed a Mindfulness book from a friend the other day I was interested to have a proper read here to see how you all got on. It seems to me that the problem is the book you have all been using - sounds to me that said irritating woman hasn't really given much thought to her target readers. The book I borrowed is easy reading and the man on the CD hasn't made me want to attack him with an ax. Although it's not specifically aimed at ADHDers, it seems to cover the same stuff as your book. Take a look at the reviews www.amazon.co.uk/Mindfulness-practical-guide-finding-frantic/product-reviews/074995308X/ref=sr_1_1_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

Hi scatterbrain! Lol! Just looked at the review and your book is the first mindfulness book I bought! I know it has excellent reviews (why I bought it..,) and I'm not saying you or anybody on here wouldn't benefit enormously from it, but I found it far too complex. I restarted it so many times I now shudder at the very thought of the raisin experiment! In fact, only a month or so ago I gave my copy to my mum who is currently stressed and especially likes anything endorsed by Ruby Wax! I must remember to ask how she's getting on with it. Admittedly I'm still on part 1 of adhd mindfulness book - hasn't helped having literally started 3 other books since I began..really need to stop doing that and only have one book on the go at a time...but I've found it very helpful how she relates mindfulness specifically to adhd and explains how it combats the core symptoms. She explains well about self-regulation and executive functions too. Reading her book is deepening my understanding of the disorder. And when I do focus on simple mindfulness practice during a day I do notice a discernable improvement. For me, mindfulness is up there with exercise/ stretching, drinking lots of water and eating well - I do feel mentally and physically so much better when I do these things. I suspect all these books teach basically the same thing. I guess the key is in finding one which you can read, digest and most importantly of all make part of your lifestyle. But thank you - you've reminded me about mindfulness and said book is back at the top of my pile of books! Perhaps this thread should be a more generalised one on mindfulness - with anyone's tips/ experiences/ thoughts on mindfulness?

Hi petra, I'm surprised, although I must admit I've only read about 40 pages and done a few of the meditations. Found them quite relaxing whilst doing them but can't seem to get much peace and quiet around here at the moment - No doors on the house (diy disaster zone)I'm going to have to pay everyone to go out. As for the meditation where you concentrate on the sounds around you - someone started bloody shooting and that set the dog off barking - doubt that's what he had in mind! I'll try again today when everyone's gone out.

According to amazon, I bought 'your' mindfulness book in July 2012, which was 6 months before I'd even come across adhd. So, thinking about it now, I guess I must have read the amazing reviews, (plus, in previous years my CBT therapist had raved about and tried unsuccessfully to get me into mindfulness) decided it was the ultimate answer to my problems, began with renewed vigour and enthusiasm, but with no understanding of the unique, unknown, unseen, unlabelled disability which would make doing '8 week course' hugely challenging for me. So instead I gained another big pile of black failure due to truly believing mindfulness was 'the answer' when all else had failed...and then having virtually no ability at the time to do it.
....haven't written that very well...but thinking about and verbalising it for the first time like this..I feel a weight has lifted from me!! So I was relieved when my mum wanted the book, because I was sick of it glaring at me from the bookcase saying 'if only you'd just properly applied yourself and tried hard enough...you could be much better now....but you chose not to...!'....Yep! - definitely needed to get this off my chest!
So for me now, reading a book which teaches mindfulness AND explains adhd, and how it can specifically help adhd is the best way forwards at the moment
And, as I said before - returning to this book for a second time, I'm even more armed with knowledge of adhd, and so my approach is different this time yet again.

cogently argued petra knowing what you are fighting is part of the battle. i will continue to watch with interest to see how you get on with mindfulness part deux i'm starting a 3wk online daily meditation thing again tomorrow otherwise i'd consider looking at the book again. i find myself continuing with daily meditation, which revolutionises my life and begets mindfulness, but still with a visceral aversion to That Book go petra
