OK, I'm not medically qualified in any way but isn't Diazepam a bad choice for anyone with ADHD since it can impair memory and attention?
I was on morphine patches taken every 3 days. It not only eased the pain but where it makes normal people sleepy, on patch day I would be wide awake and busy for around 20 hours before the drowsiness set in. Don't know if it was down to ADHD or not but I did get a lot done in those days.

Thanks Bee The dizziness has been constant for a few weeks which means I can't do much that involves standing or moving around (what a waste of Concerta)and I have so much to do but all I can do is look at it. My BP and pulse are in the normal range. Anyone else?
I expect that since no-one has replied with similar probs, it must be down to Citalopram withdrawal.

I'm on my 3rd week of 18mg Concerta. Anyone reading my thread about coming off citalopram will know I've been having probs with withdrawal symptoms. I expect I should have taken a medication break between drugs bit couldn't wait to try them. Most of my original symptoms have lessened but I have hardly eaten anything during these weeks as I feel so sick all the time. I'm not sure if it's the concerta or withdrawal. Anyone???

I'm the same
1. I always intend to reply to emails/messages, phone friends etc., just not right now. Why??? Maybe it's 'cos my mind goes blank and I can't think of anything to say. I was better at it when I used to drink more regularly, it could be 'cos I'm so unfocused but I'm hoping the meds will help with this sort of thing. I always feel guilty about it and sadly I often end up losing touch with friends - people that I really care about - the longer I leave it the harder it gets.
2. Get anxious thinking about my post to the point where I don't even open it. I put it aside, it gets moved around, put out of sight to make the place seem tidier, then it's lost. I mean to sort it out (crosses my mind daily) but usually find something more 'important' that needs doing first. Eventually I'll pile it all on to the table and attempt to sort it out (usually when I'm looking for something or I'm short of something to light the fire with). I again feel anxious, not without good reason by this time. I try and deal with the 'beyond urgent' stuff, then put more stuff in my file labelled 'Deal with it' which then gets forgotten about until I urgently need something that I could have last seen in the 'Deal with it' file. I feel an enormous sense of relief when I have had one of these sorting sessions and vow never to leave my mail unopened ever again.................'til the next day when I just have to do something first (and I don't mean super gluing the letter box down, much as I'd love to) and it starts all over again. WHY? WHY? WHY

Hi Petra Think I was on the Citalopram far too long and ended up feeling really flat. Nothing particularly upset me but nothing made me laugh either (Eeyore springs to mind)just going around in a la de dah kind of way if that makes sense. My head feels better for being off them, I just wish my body would catch up!

..... but first I need to come off Citalopram. I couldn't wait to get off that stuff. Won't tell you how I approached it, but turned from zombie to human in no time. From the Mind site, here are some of the symptoms of coming off (I didn't suffer from these at all apart from a bit of irritability): Withdrawal problems vary, depending on the type of antidepressant. Common symptoms include gastric problems (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhoea), loss of appetite, sleep disturbance (insomnia, vivid dreams or nightmares), general discomfort (sweating, lethargy or headaches), mood changes (low mood, hypomania – 'high' moods, panic, anxiety or irritability) and extreme restlessness. With SSRIs, the commonest symptoms appear to be dizziness, light-headedness, numbness, tingling and sensations that feel like electric shocks. When withdrawal symptoms are severe, they may prevent people from going out and leading a normal life, and are particularly dangerous with activities like driving. Thanks, the Mind site info was really helpful cos I wasn't sure about all my symptoms being from withdrawal or something else. I've been Citalopram free for 15 days now and although I still feel like shit it's not depression and I know it is going to end. I too have turned from zombie to human and certainly don't want to go back - just wish I knew how long I have to ride it out.

Not sure why he needs you off them though, lots of people take both & bring off them could really muddy the waters re whats working/doing what. Maybe halve your dose for two weeks, quarter it for 2 weeks & then tell him youre off completely. I think it's to do with interactions. See below (copied & pasted from web) methylphenidate ↔ citalopram Applies to: Concerta (methylphenidate), citalopram Methylphenidate may increase the blood levels and effects of citalopram. You may be more likely to experience side effects, including a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Contact your doctor if you experience increased side effects or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Thanks for googling Contrarymary. I've been doing the same but no-one else seems to have the same 'withdrawl' symptoms as me. It seems the problems that started on Monday are unrelated (can't find anyone else with them) - typical, it's going to be a long weekend!

Following advice of psych, over the past month I have weaned myself off anti depressants. Since Monday I have had constant headache, constant stomach ache and nausea. Since Wednesday this has been accompanied by bouts of shivering and bouts of head zaps, aches, numbness, weird sensations and generally feeling like shit! DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW LONG THIS MIGHT LAST???
Rewind back to Tuesday - I was prescribed Concerta. I reasoned that it would probably be best not to medicate until withdrawal symptoms cease (not easy cos I have been so desperate to get my hands on them since my ADHD realization) so I know what affects are from what.
Today - Thought sod it, they might even make me feel better, so at 10 am I popped my first pill. Now, psych said that I won't feel any effects from the meds until I have been on them about a month but from what I have read on here, I expected to feel benefits on days 1 & 2 then not a lot after that until I up the dose. I'm trying to work out if it did anything.
I got some gardening done but that's one of my avoidance tactics when I've got loads to do in the house. The fourth time I headed to the tap I got there without getting sidetracked, the fifth time I lost my trowel I remembered where I had put it. Having had to come inside a few times (dealing with withdrawal symptoms) I got back into the gardening (in the rain too) instead of just abandoning it. I finished the border I was working on!
Since 3.30pm I've been dressed in my warmest winter clothes and wrapped in my quilt feeling shit but quite awake.
And oooh look, I've written more that two sentences!!! But does it make sense?

Hugs from me too. I've been there also and things will get better. People do care but it's very difficult for them to understand if they haven't had first hand experience. Can you talk to your psych or doc. He may be able to give you something to take the edge off and if you are feeling suicidal he can fast track you to getting some sort of talking therapy which might do you some good and help you get a different outlook on things. I'm a bit crap with words but I'm willing you to feel better. Take care, and let us know how you're doing. x

I heard about a girl who was so engrossed whilst texting that she walked into the Canal. She quickly got out hoping no-one had seen her only to find all customers and staff had evacuated MacDonalds to get a look. She was pretty embarrassed but at least she was ok. I often wonder how many people get hit by cars etc. whilst texting.

OK, back on track now. Well done for fighting the system. When I was feeling low a friend of mine kept telling me to keep my ears up (she's foreign and it's a direct translation) and it always made me smile. So, keep your ears up Petra and best of luck with psych. I really hope you get somewhere fast.

Does anyone else really struggle with this? I have no interest in chatting usually for the sake of it. It's a chore for me to ring a friend up for a 'chat'. I only do if I feel I really ought to. I'm only interested in talking if there is a point or purpose to it. And I know I often let people down and offend through my lack of reciprocation, which then makes me feel more guilty, more wretched and even less likely to want to be in contact with people. the prospect of going out for coffee and shopping with a friend....frankly I would rather stick pins in my eyes. Can anyone relate? Yes, I can totally relate to this. I tend to lose touch with people because of it. I keep procrastinating calls that I say I will make 'cos I feel I won't have be able to think of anything to say and I can't ring someone and not say anything. I then feel guilty for not ringing and seem to get to the point where I completely avoid them - I don't mean to, but just can't seem to help it.

Hi Steve, Nice to meet you. I'm fairly new on here too - only been diagnosed a couple of weeks but am yet to get my concerta prescription.
Having read a lot of posts (look at the personal accounts/diaries bit) it seems quite common to be wired for the first few days and each time they up the dose but things seem to settle once they get the dosage right.
Good luck with it and let us know how you get on.

Can I ask what you was like when you started them ? Side effects etc.. ? Where I was so bad starting them I was better off stopping them but if you have had good results on them you might be the over way round ( bad coming off )

Get another opinion. Messing with anti depressants you have been on for that long means you won't know if the meds are working or not. There is a possible interaction between ssris and methyphenidate but it may be possible to switch you to an ssnri instead if you still need anti depressants. Thanks Twix I will speak to my doc for opinion next week. By the way, loved the Schumos coffee ad!

Hi Just moving part of this post out of introductions cos I think I put it in wrong place.
Psych said he could put me on concerta XL but first I need to come off Citalopram. He recommended I did it over a 6 week period but I said that since I had been forgetting to take them quite frequently lately, 4 weeks should be enough. In retrospect (I was so desperate to try the meds and so disappointed when I realized I had to wait longer) I think I was probably being a bit hasty. I've been on the citalopram over 10 years. I reduced the dose about a year ago from 60mg to 40mg and following the psych appointment I have reduced the dose to 20mg. Having thought this through I am sure you don't feel the effects for 6 weeks anyway and am worried that I will have a massive crash. Has anyone been through similar or can offer any advice?
Thanks
